YOUR FAVOURITE NEW BAND?
3) COMPUTERMAN

Here at Garbled we've been sent a fair few demo cd's and links to mp3's from up and coming bands over the years, all desperate to convince us that yes, yes they are the Next Big Thing tm. And most barely deserve to be listened to for twenty seconds. So you can imagine our surprise, and delight, when a demo cd came through the letterbox one day that was actually bloody great. So great infact that rather than just post a review, we found ourselves so enamoured by them that we literally had no choice but to grab an interview with the band and feature them on this page.

And who is this band? Well they used to be known as The Carolgee's, and have been around for a couple of years now, but recently changed
their name to Computerman because, as the band puts it " Every review started with Carolgees...but with out Spit The Dog etc etc. It seemed to put us at an immediate disadvantage, and take away from our music/performance." If you're wanting a handy musical reference, then The Manic's springs immediately to mind, but the mid-period dreamily epic style material. Unsurprisingly, it's a description they're not unhappy with - "We can understand being compared to the Everything Must Go, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours Manics stuff, we write melancholic epics like the Manics did for those two albums."

It's not just the Manics though, for one thing they're a lot more subtler than Nicky, James and Sean tend to be these days. Radiohead and JJ72 (though a less hystronic version) also spring to mind, and according to the band: "We all got into music during the whole Britpop thing so obviously have influences from that, not all have stuck admittedly. SFA, Radiohead are still a big influence. Some new bands have also influenced us hugely, Coopers, Stills etc. Also there are some obvious 80's influences such as Duran Duran, A-Ha, ELO...(As for) Non-musical influences…we are influenced by everything that happens to us being in a shit job, in bad or good relationships, what we seeing going on in the world. We want to be in a band and write songs that convey these views on the world and life. And we are inspired and motivated by knowing that being in a band and having it as a job is the only thing in the world that we all want."

They've undoubtedly great taste in music too, when asked "What's the last record you heard and thought, 'Wow, I wish I'd written that!'?", they reply with: "Stills 'Logic Will Break Your Heart', Cooper Temple Clause 'Kick Up The Fire', Radiohead 'Hail To The Theif', Duran Duran 'Rio' and Prince 'Purple Rain'. And yep, they're so good we're even prepared to forgive their liking for the Durannies...

Now as you no doubt know, a lot of hugely talented bands sadly fail to make it these days - so what have they got that will make them succeed where others have failed? "We have an absolute love for music, our favourite days of the week are when we can all practice or gig or do anything band related together. We also work hard and persevere and don't expect anything to happen overnight. We also believe that we could write and record some of the best albums ever and we will do it its just a matter of time." These are still earlyish days, and in the future we can expect "Big spectacular shows, epic songwriting, beautiful over-production on a huge album full of singles, more synthesizers, more sequencing and a march onwards into synth pop glory." Sound good to you? It does to us. Oh yes.

So if you've not found any band to fall in love with lately, go to their site:

Alex Finch.
