| August 2001 Marilyn Manson - The Nobodies I get the feeling that one day Marilyn Manson 's going to do something special, something original, exciting and new. But this isnt it. Another goth rock tune moaning about being an outsider, it frustarates as it only gets interesting in the final verse. If a little bit more thought had been put in then it could have been his greatest hit yet, as it is, it's just another slice of okayish yank rock. Release Date: 27th August. Louise – Stuck in the Middle With You Another utterly pointless cover of the Steelers Wheel classic. Louise utterly blands this tune out, and hopes everyone will rush out and buy it just because she’s dressed ‘seductively’ as a schoolgirl in the video. Refuse to purchase this garbage in the hope that her record company will drop her as soon as possible. Release Date: 27th Aug. Link: Fansite: http://www.louiseredknapp.f2s.com/main.htm Nerina Pallot - Patience Well crafted debut single, from a tortured, yet mature songwriter. Comparisons with Dido, Nelly Furtado, Alanis Morrissette abound in the media. Personally, the songwriting is similar to early work of Tasmin Archer (remember her?). Deserving a plentiful amount of air-play on Radio 2, because that is where the good songwriting is these days. Release Date: 8th Aug. Link: You can watch the video at: http://legacy.voxstar.co.uk/rich_media/detail/0,1446,1-1510,00.html Nelly Furtado - 'Turn Off The Light' More Morrisette style warbling which seems oddly popular despite not being very good. When she recently appeared on BBC Choice’s Liquid News she seemed charmingly insane, but that doesn’t save what is just another slice of dull pop. Release Date: 20th Aug. Lowgold – Beauty Dies Young A return to form after their last release, this is back to the slow, lush, gorgeous pop melodies that we know and love. Release Date: 27th August. Link: Official Site: www.lowgold.com America Hi-Fi – Flavour of the Weak The American Ash? Surely not? Well, I’m afraid so, as this is pop punk-lite, with the lead singer’s surprisingly shaky voice annoying in exactly the same way as Tim Wheeler’s does. It’s by no means incompetent or terrible, just seemingly pointless. Link: Official Site: http://www.americanhi-fi.com/ Gorrilaz – Tomorrow Comes Today A far more downbeat, trancey track, with Gorrilaz unique brand of ‘sparkly pop wackiness’ sadly missing. Infact this could easily be a Blur song, which isn’t to say it’s bad, it’s just not quite what I expected from the group. Link: Fansite: http://members.xoom.it/yakko/gointro.htm Super Sister – Shopping Another godawful, and not that attractive, girl band hits the scene. gc(uk) had the unfortunate experience of watching them mime to this song whilst seeing Closure being recorded (link: Audience Participation) and couldn’t believe then how bad this song was then. It’s about the joys of shopping if you haven’t guessed. And it’s pop at it’s most simplistic, tacky level. Terrible. Release Date: 13 August. Bjork – Hidden Place A quite normal track from the crazy icelandic one. Sort of pleasant, definitely inoffensive, but basically just not that interesting. Still, not bad, and indie’s a more interesting place with Bjork around. Release Date: 6th of Aug. Link: Official Site: http://www.bjork.com/unity/ The Charlatans – Love is the Key The effect of living in the US is all too clear on The Charlies latest release, a slice of fried southern Californian indie rock that which could only be described as ‘vaguely pleasant’ if you’re feeling very kind. If someone ever asks you to define ‘trivial’, then just play them this. (AF) Tim Burgess reportedly said this is the best album they've done. If this is any indication, it is the most cohesive album to the US sound. It is pleasant enough to listen to, but not inspiring like "My Beautiful Friend" or the classic "The only one I know". (CA) Release Date: 27th Aug. Link: Fansite: http://folk.uio.no/eirikgu/Charlatans/ Spiritualised – Stop Your Crying Jason Pierce returns with a tune you’d expect Embrace to trot out in their sleep. Its actually pretty good, due to Pierce’s lo-fi vocals, and lyrics which aren’t quite as patronising as those found in the McNamara brothers work. Builds very nicely too, and actually gets somewhere by the end for once. Epic, but in a good way. Release Date: August 27th. Link: Official Site: http://www.spiritualized.com/ Embrace – Wonder Another big orchestral number from the boys who refuse to give up producing huge string laden ballads. I’d like to like it a lot more, as Ive fond memories of Danny and co., but vocally it’s just so nasally, more so than ever before, and the lyrics aren’t half as profound as they’re supposed to be. Still, tries hard, and vaguely nice-ish. So recommended if you’re a fan, or sick of teenpop. Release Date: 20th August. Link: Official Site: http://www.embrace.co.uk/index_flash.cfm Muse – Bliss I think Ive been a little unfair on Muse in the past, perhaps simply because they promised so much but failed to quite deliver. But this electro-operatic release is pretty special, powerful, affecting but never overwhelming. It builds throughout, but doesn’t quite deliver, but video of the month simply because it trys so hard, oh, and because it’s such a pretty one.(AF) I differ slightly from my colleague Mr. Finch, as I have liked Muse since they were recommended to me by a friend. Whilst ignorant people dismissed the first album as a third rate Radiohead-inspired album, "Bliss" moves them nearer the Queen or U2 status; propelling them towards super-stardom, and setting them up as a potential 'next big thing'. The third single from the sci-fi influenced "Origin of Symmetry" is just as strong as predecessors "Plug in Baby" and "New Born", and Muse undoubtedly have one of the albums of the year. Release Date: 20th Aug. Link: Official Site: http://www.musclemuseum.com/ 100 Reasons – EP 2 Shouty shouty polite punk from this Surrey based band. Easily one of the better nu-metal bands this country has produced, and musically they’re fine, but it’s all lacking anything close to passion or belief. Fine. Nothing more. Release Date: 6th August. Link: Official Site: http://www.sonymusic.co.uk/hundredreasons/frame.htm Aerosmith – Fly Away From Here More ridiculously huge US power pop, which sounds exactly like their last eight singles. I had Aerosmith forced upon me as a small child (no, not like that) due to my older sisters’ love for them, and thus have some fondness for Steve Tyler and co. And I understand that you can’t go on being hoary old rockers forever, but OTT ballads like this is just embarrassing. They should have split up years ago, and now probably never will do so. Bound to become weaker and weaker. Link: http://www.aerosmith.com/detect.html Mo Solid Gold - Safe From Harm A smooth soul cover of the Massive Attack classic. Sure it’s good and all, but there’s no reason for its existence, as the band’s original material is equally as interesting. Release Date: 6th August. Link: Official Site: http://www.mosolidgold.com/ A Camp - I can buy you Side project for Cardigans lead singer Nina Persson and Ex 'Shudder to think' guitarist and newly married husband Nathan Larsson, and produced by Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse fame; this lush Americana influenced indie lite pop is Mark and Lard's record of the week (23/7) and is deservedly so. Serenity is the key here, with Nina's gliding vocals acting as the perfect accompaniment to an already breathtakingly sentimental track. As close to perfection in conveying emotion through music, whilst retaining all the necessary catchy hooks of a pop song. Released on August 20th. Link: Official Site: www.a-camp.org Sophie Ellis Bextor – Take Me Home Those expecting The Audience part two are sure to be disappointed, as this strays all too far in to Alanis Morrisette territory. It’s a fine, well produced ballad, with a bit of a cinema-ry feel, but lacking any real heart or soul. Not that anyone will ever remember her, but alarmingly similar to early nineties songstress Jerry Burns, which could never be an even slightly good thing. Release Date: 13th Aug. Radiohead - Knives out Probably the most contemporary single they have released since Karma Police, and with a surreal cartoony video as a promotional tool, this should sell by the articulated lorryload. Taken from the Amnesiac album, and is classic Radiohead. Release Date: 6th August Link: Fansite: Fitter Happier at: http://radiohead1.tripod.com/ New Order - Crystal Somewhere behind Stereo MCs in the long overdue, eagerly awaited category are the masters of electronica/jangly indie synthesised popular guitar music. If this is a typical example of the forthcoming album, the wait will definitely have been worth it. Let's face it, they can take their time to make it great. Thank goodness it is then. Release Date: 13th Aug. Link: Official Site: http://www.neworderweb.com/ July 2001 Cosmic Rough Riders – Revolution (in the summertime?) Luscious summery track from the Cosmic boys. An incredibly well timed release, considering the current riots in Genoa, which claims ‘we don’t need a revolution in the summertime’. So maybe not the most politically astute track ever released, but very laid back, and very cool. Release Date: 26th July. Link: Official Site at: www.cosmicroughriders.com Preston School of Industry - Whalebones From ‘Spiral Stairs of Pavement’ the sticker on the front of the CD states, which is presumably the only way to get people to buy this extremely average piece of US indie rock. Gone are all the things that made Pavement interesting – ie. out of tune instruments, crazed melodies and nonsensical lyrics, and replaced by just a dull drone. Not worth even the £1.99 price tag. Release Date: 26th July. Link: Official Site: www.prestonschoolofindustry.com The Human League – All I Ever Wanted No, no, no, no, no. NO. I’m just not in the mood for tolerating this sort of shite. Tacky electro pop nonsense. Eighties bands should never reform. The whole decade should be forgotten. So don’t buy this. Please. For me? Release Date: 30th July. Link: Fansite: http://users.senet.com.au/~barney25/home.htm Catatonia – Stone by Stone I’m afraid I lost all respect for Cerys Matthews as soon as every interview with the band centred around her post-fame breakdown. After all its not like they ever reached ‘household name’ status, and anyhow, my sympathies for famous people is in short supply these days, with the worrying trend of most singers seemingly breaking down after just one hit single starting to really annoy. Anyway, this latest single just goes to show how far Catatonia have lost touch with reality, as they decide to go with a laid back, string filled ballad. When once they were cute spunky indie kids, now all their bile seems to have been lost, and blandness is a top of their manifesto. A bit of a shame because they once amused, but nothing to lose sleep over I guess. Release Date: 23rd July. Link: Official Site: www.catatonia.com Sum41 - Fatlip Metalheads from Canada. Who would have thought it? But, seemingly here to erase our memories of fellow canucks Shania Twain, Bryan Adams, and the Barenaked Ladies. This quartet follow up their debut EP "Half-Hour of power" with this single, taken from their debut long play release "All killer, No Filler" , which has clearly been influenced by classic heavy metal icons such iron maiden and judas priest. The single itself is a touch heavier than a lot of the powerpunk that has done the rounds in recent years, but is definitely somewhere rooted near Offspring or Green day, with its catchy chorus. Link: www.sum41.com/ Cast – Desert Drought In which John Power gets down with his funky black side (?) and drags out the inane disaster that Cast have always been for yet another album. Y’know the formula by now, incoherent and rambling lyrics plus trad. Guitars, and the addition of a vague R’n’B sound only serves to make things worse. Please note: Any/all emails sent to us begging Cast to split up will e gladly forwarded to the bands management. Release Date: 16th July. Link: Official Site: www.cast.co.uk Roots Manuva - Witness (1 Hope) Taken from forthcoming album, "Run Come Save Me", this features rhymes which include 'splitter' and 'bitter', which on first listen may seem a trifle odd and humorous, but in reality fit well within the concept of the track. Certainly one of the better and more original MCs to return. Release Date: 23rd July. R.E.M. – All The Way To Reno (you’re gonna be a star) Got Automatic for the People or Out of Time? Then there’s no need for you to buy or even listen to this, being just a inferior pastiche. When music gets as familiar as this you really have to question the point of the band continuing. Release Date: 23rd July. Link: Official Site: www.remhq.com Prefab Sprout - Cowboy Dreams Ahem. As a die-hard fan, I found it really difficult to stomach the switch from hopelessly romantic pop songs with fantastic lyrics, to a concept album which has clear western tendencies. However, in all honesty; despite the fact that Paddy McAloon is one of the greatest songwriters of the past two decades, they do not seem as relevant anymore to the top 40 charts. The telling sign was when they released "A Prisoner of the Past", an absolute classic in the making, and it reached 31. After a four year hiatus, brothers Paddy and Martin McAloon return with this curious offering from the recently released "The Gunman and other stories". It is a curious offering due to the fact it has already been performed by Jimmy Nail, although Paddy McAloon wrote the song specifically for Crocodile Shoes. I do prefer this arrangement, and Paddy McAloon does have a nicer sounding voice, but expect to hear it on Radio 2, out of all the national stations. Link: Official Site: www.prefabsprout.com Mercury Rev - Darkness Rising One of the best bands from the United States prove why they are lauded by critics either side of the Atlantic, as they continue the standard set by bands such as Grandaddy. Neil Young influences abound. Link: Official Site: http://www.mercuryrev.net/ King Adora - Friday Night Explodes OK, what do early Manic Street Preachers guitar licks, sleaze-rock reminiscent of Guns and Roses, and the homo-erotic tendencies/glam metal of Marilyn Manson? They all clearly influence this boisterous band from Birmingham and intensity is the name of the game, as one of the better tracks on the album gets an airing to close out their acclaimed, but moderately successful album, "Vibrate You". Something to be elevated above the dirge, like the wheat from the chaff. Link: Official Site: http://www.kingadora.com/ Mull Historical Society – Animal Cannibus Fresh from supporting The Strokes this month, Mull Historical Society release another fresh slice of indie pop. Not as immediately catchy as I Tried, but still mighty fine, and fast becoming one of my favourite bands. About escaping small town life, they might wear their hearts on their sleeves a little too obviously, but hey, who cares when they write tracks this good. Release Date: July 9th. Link: Official Site: http://www.mullhistoricalsociety.com/ Depeche Mode - I feel Loved Strong outing from the Basildon boys as the second single from the excellent Exciter album, should keep them in the upper echelons of the charts, and proves yet again old stagers like the Mode and New Order can more than cut it with the youngsters of today. Release Date: 23rd July. Link: Official Site: http://www.depechemode.com/ Turin Brakes - Mind over Money Yet another lavish folk track from Olly and Gale, from the revered "The Optimist" album; just great guitars, no more to be said. Release Date: 30th July. Link: Official Site: http://www.turinbrakes.co.uk/ Sugababes - Soul Sound Following the pouty, urban angst of 'Overload' and 'Run for Cover', enters this summery uplifting tune that has them all smiling (hooray!). It is OK, but not thought-provoking. Release Date: 16th July. Link: Fansite: http://www.mandymoore4always.org/sugababes/sugababes.html Ash - Sometimes Taken from the excellent "Free All Angels" album. This is the closest Ash get to a ballad, and has already been said 'a gorgeous slice of summer rock.' (CA) One of the better releases from Free All Angels, because, yep, you guessed it, it sounds like their earlier fragile material rather than the powerindiepop they’ve been formulaically trotting out over the last couple of years. Not great, but no tragedy. (AF) Release Date: July 9th. Link: Fan Site: http://ashtabs.tripod.com/ Geri Halliwell - Scream.... I can't be bothered to even write out the title. Recommendation to avoid like 'Springtime for Hitler'. (CA). Cant agree more. Avoid like you would a chainsaw wielding psychopath. (AF) Release Date: 30th July. Link: Official Site: http://www.geri-halliwell.com/ The Soft Parade - Empty at the End Doors Tribute band? well, whatever they are; they are about to prove to be a lively inclusion to this review, with this catchy, upbeat, single following the excellent "Silent to the Dark" epic. Both are set to form part of their debut LP, which is being eagerly awaited. Release Date: 26th July. Link: Official Site: http://www.thesoftparade.com/ Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame Preferred the Bangles version. Who doesn't? (OK, Who doesn't over the age of 22?) Release Date: 23rd July. Link: You can watch the video at the Official Site at: http://www.atomickitten.com/home_index.htm N-Sync - Pop In contrast, a boy band reinvent their image, and still sound remarkably like a boy band, albeit with a patchy track, lacking the infectious melodies of "Bye, Bye, Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me". What am I saying? Just avoid. Link: Fansite: http://www.nsync-zone.com/ They Might Be Giants – Boss of Me The Malcolm in the Middle theme music. Though a little bit more varied and mellow. Sigh. In fairness I should admit that I own about three albums by the band from their early nineties ‘lets just fuck about and put anything down to music’ phase, and I’m kinda glad to see them still going. But in all honesty its not all that good. Music for the under eights. Release Date: 16th July. Link: Official Site: http://www.tmbg.com/froMain.html Daft Punk - Digital Love Third track to be released off the outstanding "Discovery" album. The animated videos set in space are now becoming standard fare. But it is still a great dance track. Great Album. Buy it Now. Link: Official Site: http://daftpunknet.multimania.com/ Green Day - Waiting Third track to be taken from last year's resurgent "Warning" album. Green day at their finest. No other explanation required. Link: Official Site: http://www.greenday.com/ The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist Stand out track of the album "Since I Left You". All looks good for Australia, with the present dance movement reaching these shores. It is set to have people erasing the phrase "Men at Work" from their memories, and will hopefully take a bit of exposure off Kylie, which will be a good thing. Link: http://www.theavalanches.homestead.com/ Claire Freeland - Free Okay, lets get the political correctness crap out of the way – of course there’s nothing wrong with pop stars being overweight, ugly, or even just plain ordinary (as surely most of the Spice Girls have recently proved). But the problem is that Claire just doesn’t get the whole teenpop thing – it’s not about selling music, just wank fantasies, and if you’re going to try and challenge the status quo then you better do it with some style and originality. But this is tedious pop of the worst kind, akin to a eurovision song contest failure. Which is a real shame. Release Date: 9th July. Link: Alas we cant find one. Elbow – Powder Blue Gorgeously mournful ballad pop. One of the few great white hopes to deserve the praise, and whilst the initial Radiohead comparisons may partially apply, it’s only in the sense that this is a tad downbeat and the singer can actually carry a tune. Anyway, romantic, beautiful, and perfect for those days when the world just doesn’t give enough. Release Date: 9th July. Link: Powderblue fansite at: http://www.powderblue.fsnet.co.uk/ Backyard Babies - Brand New Hate Every now and again, a record comes along to demolish the corporate mainstream vogue which becomes bland due to overkill on airplay. Well, "Brand New Hate" is taken from the Swedish Band's third LP "Making Enemies is Good", and on this form, you would find it difficult to disagree. A blitzkrieg of guitars, sleazy solos and the sort of rock music that 70's and 80's gutter rock bands were famous for. The closest comparison I can make to this is Guns and Roses in their prime, with a touch more pace, and a touch more edge. I'd recommend that the album be checked out, but pay particular attention to "Painkiller"; one of the outstanding tracks on the album. Link: Official Site at: http://www.backyardbabies.com/ Big Dog - In the Middle Out of the ashes of Black Grape, the talented former members produce the best summer song so far to be released. Slated as funk; but clearly has Bob Marley influences, and singer Kermit's ambivalence regarding a dispute with his girlfriend definitely provided the perfect inspiration for this refreshing tune superbly designed to chill too on a hot summer's day. The best feel good songs always come from a bad situation, and this is a prime example. Link: Official Site at: http://www.jive-records.co.uk/bigdog/ Train - Drops of Jupiter Really mainstream yank alt rock which strays worryingly into Bon Jovi/Aerosmith territory. Infact it’s the lead singers vocal likeness to a young Steve Tyler and a way with trite lyrics (‘She acts like summer but walks like rain’) that really worries. Surely there’s just no need for any more of this kind of soft rock. Only of interest if you’re over thirty five. Link: Official Site at: www.trainline.com/ Blink 182 - Rock Show Taken from the "Take off your pants and jacket" album. This is three minutes of catchy, punk influenced, but well toned down rock. I would compare it to Feeder's "Seven Days in the Sun", and suggest that it is fine for a while, but is not a classic by any means, and lacks anything engaging enough to encourage regular interest. Release Date: 2nd July. Link: www.blink182.com/ U2 – Evolution Standard U2 nonsense given a remix for the Tomb Raider movie. Sounds a bit like the one they did for Batman Forever, but, somehow, even worse. If they have to keep on releasing music, can’t they just stick to the sickly ballad formula which is at least a little more ignorable. Sigh. As dull as you’d imagine it is/hope it never could be. Release Date: July 16th. Link: http://www.u2.com/ Ocean Colour Scene – Mechanical Wonder Dadrock at it’s most tedious returns. You know the formula now. Guitars. Gravelly vocals. Mod shite. Worse than Shed Seven. I really cant be bothered to expound on this any further. If you like ‘em you’ll buy it, and the rest of the world will just ignore it. Release Date: July 2nd. Related link: Ocean Colour Scene Central at: http://www.redhorn.demon.co.uk/ Super Furry Animals – Juxtaposed With U Wow. I’d given up the Super Furries as lost in a psychedelic haze years ago, but there back and stronger then ever before. It’s not as if they’ve gone Drum n bass or anything, but this is just a little straighter, a little more touching than ever before. Perfectly timed for the summer. Release Date: July 9th. Related Link: Official Site at: http://www.superfurry.com/ June 2001 Rialto - Anything Could Happen Louis and co. return with a vague attack on the critics who thought they’d never return. It’s hardly subtle, opening with the line ‘they tried to kill us of, but the show’s not over’ but fun nonetheless. Now if only they didn’t sound exactly the same as four years ago and moved away from their John Barry / Pulp cinematic sound then there’d be cause for excitement. But it is good to see they’re still alive at least. Release Date: 25th June. Link: Official Site at: www.rialto.co.uk/ The Strokes - Hard To Explain The saviour of modern music? And the best American band of the decade? Well of course not, but they’re still damn good, and surely that’s all that really matters. Catchy, if surprisingly jangly indie with lyrics with a sense of humour that actually mean something. B-side New York City Cops is even better oddly, though the worrying similarities to Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics at one point almost had me re-writing this review. Fortunately it’s only a very brief lapse.(AF) Indie. Guitars. Velvet Underground influences. New York. The Next Big Thing. Energetic. Innocent. Plucky. All these words describe and band that are good, partly due to them being far from polished, and seeming to be green around the gills, but that adds to their charm. Check out 'Nite Life', and look for their debut LP, "This is it", to appear soon. (CA) Release Date: 25th June. Link: Official Site at: www.thestrokes.com/ Belle and Sebastian – Sing….Jonathan David Finally starting to fall in love with these fey scottish popsters, mainly due their sly, knowing lyrics which cant fail to amuse. This time round we’re given a play on a biblical tale, spun to relate to those who’ve ever watched the one they love leave with a friend. At the very least it’s refreshingly original compared to the majority of bands who sing about their oh so depressing lives. Hated by the now ridiculously populist NME, which can only be a good thing credibility wise. Release Date: 18th June. Related link: www.belleandsebastian.co.uk Mathew Jay – Please Don’t Send Me Away I want to like this because his voice is so impressive, but lyrically it’s all a tad weak, and, yes, this does stray worryingly close in to folk music territory. About as inoffensive as indie gets, but there’s no hooks, no passion and no real reason to buy. Release Date: Out on the 18th. Related Link: We can’t find one. Linkin Park – Papercut Yank rock. Do I really have to go in to any more details? Okay, but briefly: Shirt hating men jump up and down and scream out their frustrations. This time round, they turn their steely glares at the tragedy of papercuts, of which at least ten people die of each year. Trivial. Release Date:18th June. Related Link: Official Site at: http://www.linkinpark.com/ Deacon Blue – A is for Astronaut In which Deacon Blue turn all Travis-y. Which I’m not sure whether or not is a good thing or not. They’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for being one of the very few eighties bands to be any good, though as Ricky Ross approaches his forties you have to wonder how much longer they can release such inoffensive pop as this. Still, one of the better tunes to clutter up shit radio station’s airplay of late. Release Date: 11th June. Related Link: Official Site at: http://www.deaconblue.com/ Gorrilaz – 19-2000 More from Damon Albarn’s side project that I cant decide whether I like or not. It’s certainly got a very cool sound, and the whole image thing is cute, but at the same time it doesn’t mean anything to me, though presumably with a chorus of ‘Get the cool, get the cool shoeshine’ it doesn’t mean anything to anyone. Still, fun for now. Just. Release Date: 25th June. I am Kloot – Morning Rain I’m not too sure about all this NAM business, but if it means that bands like I Am Kloot get a little more coverage in the now far too bland NME then who’s to complain. Because there’s something special going on behind the guitar led tracks, and you cant help but feel that the band must have sunk too many bottles of JD to be able to come up with b-side ‘twist’. Plus any band which ends a live track with a sincere ‘Thanks very much, it’s been a fucking pleasure’ deserve your support. Single and video of the month. Release Date: 25th June. Link: Official Site at: http://www.iamkloot.com/ Dirty Harry – Nothing Really Matters More lite-girl punk with a couple of fun metally bits but there’s nothing that substantial or interesting going on. Starts off well promising a real deep dark feel but all too quickly falls in to Garbage territory, who we hoped would never be an influence to anyone. Plus you can’t help but cringe when hearing that line about cross dressing vicars. Oh, and b-sides which are just dodgy remixes impresses no one these days. Not a promising debut. Release Date: June 4th. Link: Official Site at: www.dirtyharryonline.com Incubus - Drive Taken from the critically rejoiced album "Make Yourself". If it is really that necessary to position this track within a genre and prepare a justifiable comparison, then here goes; rap-metal that is more rock than metal, converted to the form of a ballad, or for want of a better comparison; Limp Bizkit turning all acoustic on us. Nevertheless, this has quite a dark feel to it, with the turntables maintaining the tempo of the song, amidst its relaxing acoustic guitar, and guitar solo; effected to sound like a dreamy hammond organ. Release Date: 4th June. Link: Official Site: http://www.enjoyincubus.com/ Thirteen:13 – Truth Hurts Whilst Starsailor have been undeservedly praised in the music media of late, the much ignored but far better Thirteen:13 too sound as if they spent their formative years listening to The Verve but actually do something interesting with the sound. Softer and sweeter than Mr Ashcroft ever managed to be, this is mellow, romantic stuff and perfect listening post-hangover. Release Date: 11th June. Link: Official Site at: http://www.thirteen-13.com/ The Manic Street Preachers – Ocean Spray Similar to So Why So Sad, this is another slice of manics-lite, though with a slightly inane chorus of “Oh please stay awake, so we can drink some ocean spray” this is nowhere near as catchy, or meaningful for that matter. Once again it sounds superb, but is just too lyrically weak to really enjoy. Release Date: 4th June. Link: You can watch the video to Ocean Spray on the official site at: http://www.manics.co.uk/manics/ Stereophonics – Have A Nice Day If you’re going to use one of the most despised and satirised phrases in modern times then you better make sure you’ve got a pretty superb song to back it up with, right? And not just more dull moaney rock with a vague narrative of little interest anyone, yeah? You’ve probably already guessed that this isn’t going to be a positive review by now, but I just get so frustrated by the stereo boys as I’m sure they used to be good. (Hack briefly listens to their first album, then returns). Yep. They were. And this release marks probably the greatest case of ‘used to be good, now utter shite’ indie has seen in the last decade. Don’t just avoid buying, but cover your ears whenever it’s played. Release date: 4th June. Link: Fansite - Stereophonics Online at: http://www.stereophonics.co.uk/ Muse – New Born A less electric and almost childlike intro gave me hope that Muse had changed direction altogether, but it’s sadly just over a minute when the crashing guitars storm in, and Matt’s whining begins again. It’s okay in a frustrated screamy kind of way, but like Placebo, I’m starting to wonder whether they’re yet another band who have nothing left to say post their debut album. Now out on the 4th June. Related Link: You can download an MP3 of an Evening Session recording of the song from: http://www.musefans.com/ May 2001 Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds – Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow I just never expected this from Mr Cave et al. So whilst it’s no gloss-pop hit, it’s shockingly upbeat for the king of all that is gloomy. Despite being about yet another loved one dying painfully, it’s the rich vein of humour running throughout that makes this joyous. An almost gospel sound in parts, plus a superb video featuring Jason Donovan and Jarvis Cocker among others, and you’ve got Cave’s best chance at a hit in years. Release Date: May 21st. Link: Nick Cave Online at: http://www.nick-cave.co.uk/ Weezer - Hash Pipe Five years have gone by between this and their previous release "Pinkerton", and this song from the critically acclaimed 'Green Album' provides a glorious return for Rivers, Brian, Matt, and Patrick. Hash Pipe is uncompromising, yet slightly more reformed in outlook than any of their previous work, but still has the ability and is reminiscent of the vocals on some supergrass tracks, not that that is a bad thing. Infectious, raucous and would still be able to nestle in nicely to Radio 1's playlist. Link: Official Site at: http://www.weezer.com/ Tool - Schism. Taken from the recently released "Lateralus" album, which has been revered by all in the rock media; The definition of Schism is a difference of opinion between two people within the same religion e.g. Pope and Cardinal. The religious overtones aside, this is on a par with 'The Pyramid Song' for relaxation purposes, and is an impressive return for Maynard James Keenan and Co. after side-projects extended the gap between this and the highly rated 1996 album "Aenima". Link: Official Site at: http://www.toolband.com/ King Adora – Bionic So covering Dolly Parton may have made them all post-ironic, and got them a fair amount of press coverage in the process, but when left to their own devices it all gets a little trad glam rock. Nice look, nice idea, but in five years time they’ll have about the same amount of critical respect that Kingmaker have these days. Yep, that dull. Release Date: 14th May. Link: Official Site at: http://www.kingadora.com/ Arab Strap – Turbulence More lo-fi scottish mumblings, but this time with a slightly tinny dance beat from Aiden Moffat and co. It’s not that it isn’t fine and all, but I cant help but feel that T’Strap have been repeating the same idea for just too long now. Okay if you haven't heard them before, but hardly essential anymore. Release Date: May 7th. Link: Unofficial Arab Strap Site at: http://www.discoboys.co.uk/ South – Keep Close This hack finds himself frustrated once again after finally hearing a much praised band and discovering that they’re just very very average. Dull stoned rock that might sound okay if you’ve never heard anything by the Stone Roses or Badly Drawn Boy. Otherwise you cant help but be disappointed. Release Date: 21st of May. Link: The only fansite on the net at: http://www.geocities.com/southsiteuk/ JJ72 – Algeria One of the less melodic tunes on the album has now been remixed by Flood and released as a net single only, though the video is being given medium rotation on MTV2 too. And it’s okay, but all too similar to the rest of their angsty screamingly passionate vocals over chunky guitars tunes, and nowhere near the best track on the album. Release Date: You can download the song throughout the whole of May from the Official Site at: http://www.jj72.com/. Alternative Link: JJ72.org is an amazingly detailed and well written site and can be found at: http://www.jj72.org/ Radiohead – The Pyramid Song The first release from Amnesiac (out on June 4th), this tricks you into thinking we’re back to conventionality with a piano laden beginning before all too quickly it descends in to Kid A wank jazz territory. It’s another cold, detached track, which, whilst in no way bad, fails to really mean anything to me. Which surprises, as they were so good in concert last September, far more engaging than this single would suggest.(AF) In complete contrast to my colleague Mr. Finch, I find this the perfect song to chill out to, and provokes introspective thought and quiet contemplation. I like the use of the synchopated rythhm of the piano, and the backing vocal haunt like no other band out there. Sure, it will be great to hear the rocking side of Radiohead soon, when Amnesiac arrives, but until then, this is a pleasant opener. Release Date: The 21st. Link - Fansite ‘At Ease’ at: http://www.ateaseweb.com Travis - Sing OK, so we come to the 'bland third album' stage then. Most bands start off with a edgy, raw, original offering for a first album; mellow a tad for the second album, and then just let the cash cow be milked for the third album. To be fair, the introduction of the banjo is a nice touch. However, a similar pattern is forming here; very little lyrics are being used again. "Sing" must appear at least 50 times in the record. You are just left wondering "OK so Franny is looking to offer something different by going for the 'Pepe Le Pew' look, and bringing a banjo, but other than that, what the hell is exciting about this record?", and to be perfectly honest, there is not a great deal of excitement distributed by this record. You want excitement, buy the Stereo MCs single instead. Out on the 28th of May, you can watch the video on the official site at: http://www.travisonline.com/ Stereo MCs - Deep, Down and Dirty It is seriously amazing, but also must get nauseating for the bandmembers to hear this emphasis of the nine year gap between the release of the new album, which has the same name as this single, and the previous album of 1992. After mainstream success occured with the endorsement of 'Connected' by a certain Mobile phone operator, it is welcome relief that the new single has usurped the exhausted airplay of that record on both TV and radio, and deserves to be lauded as their new anthem. Originality, edginess, and pure brilliance, refreshes stale memories of 'Connected' and 'Step it up'. Critically, I am sure that this should be regarded as their best work. Masters of UK Hip-hop return, and are welcomed with open arms. Out on the 21st. Link - Official Site at: http://www.stereomcs.co.uk/ The Divine Comedy - Bad Ambassador Anyone who's read Shakespeare's "The Tempest" should know there has to be a compromise somewhere. Maybe it was the lure of Vaudeville or Busby Berkley influences, but Neil Hannon retains the best elements of previous orchestral ensemble extravaganzas from Casanova and A short album about Love, whilst introducing the more mature sound previously inducted in "Love what you do". The result, a wonderful tune, and arguably one of the best tracks on the "Regeneration" album. The video endorses Busby Berkeley, Ice Skating and Beauty and the Beast which, when blended, produces quite an interesting video. Out on the 7th. Link - Fansite The Divine Online at: http://www.geocities.com/deeobat/divineframes.htm Badly Drawn Boy – Spitting in the Wind More lo-fi relaxed melodies centering around Damon’s desire to stop pissing in the wind. Ahem, sorry, been listening to the album too much, as for presumably chart reasons the tracks been re-jigged so that he’s doing the much more socially acceptable spitting. Anyway, this is lovely stuff, actually rather sweet, and deserves at the very least a brief sprint in and out of the top 10. Out on May 7th. Link - BDB Fansite at: http://takeoff.to/badlydrawnboy My Vitriol - Grounded The British Foo Fighters? Probably. It is clear to see Som's Nirvana's influences and his adoration of Dave Grohl, but it is carried off with more interest and verve than any bland song by Kelly Jones could ever hope to achieve. One of the most promising rock acts this year, and this could quite clearly be their "Everlong", infectious, and anthemic. Out on the 7th of May.
