| DECEMBER 2005 COLDPLAY - TALK Tired of us apologising for liking Coldplay? Yeah, we are too. You know the reasons why. Hell, secretly you probably feel the same, unless their brand of melancholic musings really aren't your cup of tea. Anyhow, this is weaker than Fix You, unsurprisingly considering that's the best track on their new album, and it's okay, but nothing to get excited about. We hope it'll take the Christmas No.1 spot just because nothing else credible is likely too, but hell, it's not going to happen is it, not with all the novelty crap out this year. (AF). Release Date: December 19th. Fansite: http://www.coldplaying.com/index.php ROBBIE WILLIAMS - ADVERTISING SPACE Bizarrely, after hearing Tripping about seventy two times I started becoming fond of it. I know not why. Even the best of us have our bad days, after all. I could listen to this a thousand times though, and all I'd say is "Meh...It's okay...Bland...Doesn't go anywhere...Ah well, what did you expect?". There's something about Robbie that makes you hope that one day he'll repeat the success of Angels, but I can't quite put my finger on it. It's unlikely that it'll happen judging by this, anyway. (AF). Release Date: 12th December. Link: Fansite: http://www.therobbiewilliamssite.com/ CRAZY FROG - JINGLE BELLS / CAN'T TOUCH THIS He's back, the little fucker. Thankfully the presumably drug addled and generally idiotic producers of this record won't be after this though, the most uninspired, tedious and shite Christmas record ever made. Yep, it's even worse than Avid Merrion's effort last year, and that made several people cut their ears off. Thankfully it's no longer cool to like T'Frog, even in a knowing ironic way, so expect this to bomb, and everyone involved in making it to be fired. (AF). Release Date: December 12th. Link: Official Site: http://www.crazyfroghits.com/ THE STROKES - JUICEBOX Watching their performance on Top of the Pops it is easy to see why the Strokes are not particularly liked in some circles. Jealous gits like me hate this cool aloofness that these New York Playboys exude and the fact they probably had their daddies’ bankroll their career (Albert Hammond’s dad having chart success way back when probably helps). A couple were educated at a Swiss boarding school, they have arty haircuts, model girlfriends blah blah blah. So it was nice that their performance of the new single Juicebox was actually refreshingly dull. Albert (Hammond Jr.-curly-wigged poncey layabout who plays a guitar like Mark King played a bass in Level 42) and Nick (Valensi - OC pretty boy with Thierry Henry arrogance) pretty much sounded like playing the same parts all the way through in a repetitive loop, Nikolai (Fraiture) stands their playing the odd note, looks over at the camera bemused with a face that simpers “am I on now” and sighs lethargically. Fabrizio (Moretti - recently mustachioed drummer last reported to be dating Drew Barrymore) is probably the hardest working member of the band behind the drums, although Julian (Casablancas - was acne ridden but it’s cleared up now) pushes him with his Eastern European art-indie vocal before he segues into Broadway Showstopper in the Chorus. Suffice to say the lack of anything interesting happening ‘don’t impress me much’. However, it bears minimal resemblance to the actual track. Listening to it, it is clear they looked to change the sound marginally, whilst retaining what they knew, and is actually more listenable and reasonable than originally thought. A basic dissection would be the opening riff is supposedly like The Cramps, due to it surreptitiously sneaking in all menacing. The menacing grows into this punky snarl, then continues to build to this exhibitionistic yell, subsequently ushers in a raw-sounding abstract solo from Valensi that’s not all that complicated, then repeats, and then returns to a sombre end. Brilliant by no means, but as catchy and artificial as Hard-Fi (but I like their throwaway tunes), and practically as memorable 20 minutes later. (Well OK, I wrote that last line after two listens, I’ve heard it more often, and it is more musically memorable than I originally gave it credit for). Lyrically is a different story, and not a particularly rivetting one at that. Fine to listen to, just don’t expect earth-shattering. (CA). I'm confused here. After reading the letters page of the NME (I found it on a train, I didn't buy it, I swear!) just after Juice Box was leaked on to the net, I was expecting a completely new direction for the once cool band. But no. It's got a bit more attitude, a bit more menace as Craig mentions, but really it's nothing new at all. One can only assume that the NME readers never actually listened to Is This It? and judged it by Room On Fire. That's the only way I can make sense of their quite bizarre ramblings. (AF). Release Date: 5th December. Link: http://www.thestrokesfan.com/ TAKE THAT - RELIGHT MY FIRE Surely Back For Good would have made more sense as Take That's comeback single? Of course it would've been a lie, these boys will no doubt be only around for the tour and maybe a new album before disappearing back in to the world of the unemployed again, but at least we'd have had the chance to hear their best single over the crimbo period, rather than this garish mess. Ah well, if it keeps them from appearing on celebrity reality shows I guess I don't mind. But if it leads them to appearing on more of them, I hope all who buy it age terribly and become horrifically cynical. It's the only way they'll learn. (AF). Release Date: December 5th. Link: Fansite: http://www.take-that.co.uk/ NOVEMBER 2005 THE DARKNESS - ONE WAY TICKET Arctic Monkeys take note. Here is what could happen, should the bubble burst. Having an oustandingly successful debut can be obviously very good, but can clearly be very bad. Pressure to produce a decent followup in the space of 18 months to two years, when the first album may have included tracks written 8 years ago can be tough for some bands. Sometimes they can be complacent, and sometimes they can go over the top. And sometimes they can be The Darkness. Justin Hawkins clearly wanted to indulge his Queen fantasies a little less subtlely than the Foos did on ‘One by One’. Dave Grohl let Brian May play a guitar part on one of the tracks. Hawkins wanted Roy Thomas Baker to come in and get them to sound like Queen’s first two albums, use Freddie’s piano that was used on Bohemian Rhapsody, and literally ‘soak’ up every possible Queen cliche like a sponge. Problem is, the sound doesn’t nearly sound as fresh or good as the production of the first album, the song doesn’t sound as good, and the gimmick of Frankie (I’m sure Richie Edwards is a fine replacement) has lost ‘a kind of magic’ the band once had. They’ve looked to originalise it but sticking that new Sitar pedal doing the rounds on there for a solo, the now de rigeur cowbell for rock tracks, and multi-tracked vocals that sound like one of Hawkins’ old jingles. It is catchy, but not as catchy or as good a grower as Growing on Me. As much as their lifestyle follows the rock ‘n’ roll rollercoaster, their music will likely corkscrew and loop the loop countless more times in the future. (CA). They were pretty bad when I caught them at Wembley at the end of last year, with all of the new songs depressing, but optimistically I thought that much needed time spent in the studio might revitalise them. But no. This is turgid stuff, lacking any of the humour of the songs from the first album. Justin and co might not want to be a comedy band, but it's what they do best, and all will be disappointed by this. Ah well. It was fun whilst it lasted I guess. (AF). Release Date: 21st November. Link: Official Site: http://www.thedarknessrock.com/ GIRLS ALOUD - BIOLOGY I know, I know, I'm embarrassing myself here. But honestly, I don't fancy them, that over-tanned fake model look isn't what I go for at all. Yet I still like their music. Not enough to buy any of it, of course, but enough that when it comes on one of Freeview's sadly mostly craptastic music channels I don't flip to another channel. So what marks them out from all of the other girl bands? Mainly it's their ability (or their manager's at any rate) not to take themselves too seriously most of the time, and simply because they make throwaway yet still enjoyably varied pop music in a way that no other carefully marketed and manufactured act has done in the past few years. And this carries on that tradition, it's lightweight, but innovative enough pop-wise, and fun, something lacking far too much in music these days. (AF). Release Date: 14th November. Link: Fansite: http://www.girlsaloud.org/ JAMIROQUAI - (DON'T) GIVE HATE A CHANCE Much like the Brand New Heavies, Jay Kay and co started out in Acid Jazz/funk. And the similarities end pretty much after the Heavies didn’t follow the success of Shelter. The last album had a very now sound, but sadly not much interest. In contrast, the Earth Wind and Fire by numbers disco odysseys Kay and co have been churning out have kept them in the right half of the Top 40. Where there was interesting solo and improvisation in the first two albums, it now all seems to be about the show, the sound, and less about the lyrics conjured. In this case, Can you feel it, the walking bass lines Nathan Watts used to put on Stevie Wonder’s Seventies records and Chic-style strings are lavished upon this little spectacle. Kay (referred elsewhere as hatboy) had let his moniker feed his ego, and the hats have gotten bigger and more extravagant, and whilst his fast-living, fast-driving and romantic exploits have been fodder for the press the past four or five years, his music has failed to become fodder for anywhere above the odd retro-disco, and is certainly not waxed lyrically amongst critics when the most subjective and inaccurate of tasks is undergone - choices for album of the year. He won’t be setting any worlds alight with this one. Then again, if his music stays as fun and infectious as this (and backing it with that video certainly helps), who am I to argue? (CA). Release Date: November 7th. Link: Fansite: http://funkin.com/ SIMON WEBBE - NO WORRIES Seemingly attempting to be a UK Akon, but sounding more like a cross between Tunde from the Lighthouse Family and Seal, the former Blue boy is the third of that annoying quartet to embark on a solo career, and it’s times like this that you begrudgingly agree with their fans. To have split temporarily means essentially we get a proliferation of awfulness that usually occurs with boybands. But it’s only one or two out of the group that get a raised profile of blandness. We’re currently running at 75% for these pop performers, at least Anthony Da Costa has taken to presenting on bland daytime show GMTV instead of infecting the charts. Incidentally, avoid at all costs, but you didn't need me to tell you that. (CA). Release Date: November 7th. Link: Official Site: http://www.simonwebbe.net/ ELBOW - LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD Pity Elbow, for they once burnt so brightly, but now only flicker in the dusky evenings. Powder Blue was astonishing, hauntingly beautiful, and one of those songs that you found yourself playing time and time again. But everything since hasn't lived up to the promise shown in it, and this, whilst no means bad, is just so derivative, so average. Fans may like it, everyone else will just mutter how it's okay, but nothing more than this. (AF). Release Date: November 7th. Link: Official Site: http://www.elbow.co.uk/index.asp SON OF DORK - STRAIGHT OUT OF LOSERVILLE I heard New Found Glory UK being banded about, but sorry, this is Bowling for Soup on the Atkins diet, and Bowling for Soup are mildly amusing for about five seconds (largely due to the big guy in the glasses gimmick). Bourne and Co do their darnedest to imitate the most loathsome of bands - corporate punk bands. The cliches are there for all to hear - the whiny endings of words, the metally muted distortion of every riff, power chord etc. Ugh. I thought Fightstar’s turgid hundred-reasons/nu-metal rip-offs were bad enough, but this is at certainly at the same sub-par level, if not worse. (CA). Release Date: 7th November. DECEMBER’S SINGLE OF THE MONTH: MYSTERY JETS - ALAS AGNES | ||||||||

| Okay, okay, Mystery Jet's are technically just the new David Devant and His Spirit Wife without the stage theatrics. And I've lost you, haven't I. Well, David Devant wrote incredibly catchy pop tunes with a hint of melancholy at times, and Mystery Jets are following in their footsteps. Alas this won't sell, like Mr Devant and co never did, but I'm glad they exist, and hey, maybe in more Britpop-ish times this would have been a minor hit. Sadly the kids are still mainly listening to repetive and dull angular guitar music, and have no time for anything else, so it won't be. The fools. Anyway, because it's a quiet month, and because chances are they'll disappear faster than Milk Tray chocolates on Christmas Day, we've made it Single of the Month. (AF). Release Date: December 5th. | NOVEMBER'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH: SYSTEM OF A DOWN - HYPNOTIZE | |||||||||

| Mesmerize was frenetic and cartoony despite its adult themes, but this is more in line with the serious stuff on the Toxicity album, and lacks the dimensions of the singles released off Mesmerize. I found this to be a more metal version of one of those eighties power ballads that rises up triumphantly, has a introspective soft bit, and closes without really satisfying. It sounds more as if it’s leading into something else, rather than the sort of statement you expect from a single. Hope the album delivers better than this. (CA). Yep, it's not up to their usual standard, but hell, it's just about better than all of the other singles released this dismal month, so for that rather weak reason alone, it's this month's single of the month...(AF).
