OCTOBER 2005

NINE BLACK ALPS - JUST FRIENDS
The mix of alcohol and the festival spirit can make a lot of bands seem a lot greater than they really are. When I saw Nine Black Alps at Glastonbury this year I was enchanted by their mix of Nirvana-esque grunge and more poppier moments. This is one of the latter, and it's, y'know, fine, mostly fun stuff, and surely the definition of short and sweet. Yet it lacks substance, there's not enough too it for it ever to be anyone's favourite ever song. if you love jumping up and down in the mosh pit this will probably be one of your favourites of theirs. But everyone else will be vaguely bemused by it, and only that. (AF). Release Date: 31st October. Link: Official Site:

COMPUTERMAN - NO MORE BROKEN HEARTS
It was a tad worrying that a large number of US acts appeared in the last few years doing eighties new wave as good as we did it twenty odd years ago, so it is nice and dare i say refreshing to hear a UK act deliver with more panache than our Atlantic counterparts and not restrict themselves like a large number of those bands that use the angular guitar chops in an overlapping pattern, seemingly hellbent on making "Gang of Four influence" the most ubiquitous phrase in modern music journalism.  Sure, there's guitars running through this, but the audible backdrop you're more inclined to pay attention to is the early OMD-like synthesizers that make you think of Souvenir all over again - remembering when they were for one moment - good. Thankfully, Computerman picked early 80's new wave as their influence and not the more commercial one that evolved mid-eighties. With the Killers and The Bravery riding high this past 18 months, isn't it time we went for something home-grown, and superior. (CA). Normally I'm against anything that even has a hint of an eighties sound, yet I like this a lot. And not just because they sent me a demo about a year ago that I'm hoping one day will sell on ebay for hundreds of pounds(!). It's the passion they show, and the intelligence of the lyrics, that marks this out as something pretty special. Go buy, go see, go love. Release Date: October 24th. Link: Official Site:

MAGIC NUMBERS - LOVE'S A GAME
The odd thing about T'Numbers is how they tricked us all with their first couple of singles in to thinking they were a beautifully upbeat band. If you've got the album you'll know this isn't the case at all, there's a melancholic edge to a lot of the songs, but surprisingly it only serves to make them even more interesting, variety being the spice of life, etc, etc. This is the first melancholic single though, so don't expect it to do that well. Expect to adore it though, and if you haven't got the album, ignore the ridiculously annoying 'fat' jibes made by idiots, and fall in love with it too. (AF). Release Date: October 24th. ARTIC MONKEYS - BET YOU LOOK GOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR
Well this has been made easier for me hasn’t it?  Admittedly backed by an excellent Whistle Test pastiche sways me a tad as to their charm and character. Musically it took a bit longer to grow. I will say that I was not the biggest fan of the Libertines, and their implosion has only compounded misconceptions concerning the adulation they get compared to their longevity. This Sheffield bunch sound similar, but without the problems, ergo they seem a better proposition.  Hopefully the hype will come in more manageable doses, and they’re allowed to grow into fourth and fifth successful albums. (CA). Now I was a Libertines fan, at least of their first album, and to see this at Number One whilst Pete Docherty produces droney wank and Carl Barat fails to release anything at all of interest is quite depressing. If someone who had never heard of The Libertines listened to this they'd probably love it, but it seems too much of a copy of their trademark formula for my liking. But I'm willing to keep an open mind - let's just hope the rest of the album shows more originality than this does. (AF). Release Date: 17th October. Link: Official Site:

AHA - CELICE
Overlooked in the UK’s mainstream media since Take on me, Aha were a presumed proponent of all that was wrong with 80's music amongst critics.  Morten Harket was the poster-boy front man, and Mags and Pal played simplistic synths riffs in the background to throwaway tunes. They strove to venture away from that tag with Scoundrel Days. It flopped, they attempted to recoup interest in Stay on These Roads; a collection of stadium-rock anthems boasting power ballads usually reserved for Heart and Starship corporate rock. That too failed to galvanise interest. Presumably realising their day in the public eye was unlikely to return, they strove to make music their way, and from it’s inception at East of the Sun, West of the Moon, to their comeback album Minor Earth, Major Sky - they had perfected a sound and crafted worthy songs. The 2000 album is regarded as the best of their career, and follow up Lifelines consolidated that performance, if a tad more straying to the much-despised ‘bedwetter’ music tag usually heaped on bands like Keane. And so to this opening track of forthcoming album Analogue. Much as the album title suggests, there is a more organic ‘band’ feel to this track, and the production of Flood (or Mark Ellis) serves to invoke a sense of character amongst all this maturity. Flood’s electronica expertise garnered a favourable reputation at the helm of Depeche Mode’s super-successful Violator, and on the evidence of Celice, it could be a track to get the hipper Radio2 / more mature 6music listeners interested in them again. A melancholic ballad of sorts - it is pacey, whilst Morten Harket continues to showcase his tremendous range and feeling through his vocal performance. Better than most will expect. (CA). KAISER CHIEFS - MODERN WAY
I'm still not quite sure why I like the Kaisers post Glastonbury. Perhaps it's because of the majority of indie music being so downbeat these days, or perhaps because they know they're never going to be any more than a casual one night stand of a band, fun while they last, but only that. This is less interesting and danceable to than any of there other releases so far, but still not too bad. If you've not got the album yet, I'd recommend you do, rather than just buying this. (AF). Release Date: October 31st. Link:  Official Site: http://www.kaiserchiefs.co.uk/

KATE BUSH - KING OF THE MOUNTAIN

So reclusive Kate has come out to play for the first time in twelve years, and what’s the result? Well, it opens like some mystical world music that former collaborator and weird hippie Peter Gabriel would strive for. Save for her burgeoning fanbase, it would be unlikely to see the light of day in the Top 40, let alone the Top 10. But it picks up, and boasts quite the powerful, emotional angry, yet contained vocal from Ms Bush. According to the lyrics published on her website, it is about Elvis Presley, and appears to have a Citizen Kane reference in it - “Rosebud”.  In it’s way it appears to be some paranormal soothsaying about the consequences of megalomania and the trappings of fame. It may be more modern in sound, but it’s no less ethereal or supernatural than Running up that Hill or any of her nineties work. Fans and Critics have been gushing with delight at her return, to put Tori Amos in her place as it were, but I dare say for a lot of people it may lack the accessibility they crave. Still, nice to know she’s still alive. (CA). Release Date: October 31st. Link: Fansite:

TEST ICICLES - CIRCLE SQUARE TRIANGLE

I'm starting to worry about the indie scene. Not that there isn't a place for this sort of angular guitar moan-epic, but everything seems so downbeat, so whiney these days, where's the diversity gone? It's difficult to get over the terrible pun in the bands name, but with it I at least expected something bordering on the enjoyable. But no. If you're older than fifteen you'll have heard this sort of thing done countless times before, and a lot better too. (AF). Release Date: 24th October. Link: Official Site:
http://www.test-icicles.com/

LOVE BITES - YOU BROKE MY HEART
Being described as the female Busted, if that wasn’t enough to put you off. What with that TV show band being groomed from a show that bares a remarkable similarity in production to As If, Midge Ure’s daughter in a band called the Faders, is there any need for another lot of young gimmicky all-girl guitar bands singing “you broke my heart, I broke your nose”. There also seems to be a trend for putting red dye in your hair? The Faders, The Noise next door, and these lot. Has Sharon Osbourne cornered the market on embryonic girl-bands that look as if they’ve barely taken their GCSE exams, let alone passed them. It seems astonishing to think that Hepburn and The Donnas seem groundbreaking now, considering the Donnas particularly cut their teeth writing songs about boy trouble, much the same here. Difference is the Donnas weren’t so far removed from the influences of AC/DC and KISS as these are from any form of music with character.  Leave well alone. (CA). Release Date: October 17th. Link:

THE PADDINGTONS - SORRY
The Paddingtons are the latest 'The' band, presumably too lazy to think up anything original name-wise, and hey, who'd have thought it, but they can't be arsed to come up with anything original musically either. This tries to capture the excitement and the passion of The Libertines, but comes across as something far more average and mundane. I'd be disappointed, but with so much predictabiltiy on show here, it's almost impossible to be. (AF). Release Date: October 17th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.thepaddingtons.net/go.php?object=home

LITTL'ANS FEAT. PETE DOCHERTY
It's hard to like Pete Docherty these days. The rampant ego-mania, the threats of violence, the wayward drug abuse that'll no doubt see him dead before he's thirty - all these could be forgiven if he was still making music like The Libertines' first album. This is the closest to that spirit he's got so far, far less droney than the singles Babyshambles' have released this year, almost romantic and almost great. But not quite. Still, it's nice to see he's not completely lost it just yet I guess. (AF). Release Date: 17th October.

RACHEL STEVENS - I SAID NEVER AGAIN BUT HERE WE ARE
I read somewhere this is pop perfection. I have to start worrying about the state of pop music if this is what they’re offering up as ‘perfection’. The perma-tanned love’s track is another one of these tracks that’s selling on the sexiness of her in and out of the video, rather than the strength of the song. It’s just as well then, that the song is totally forgettable, and more worrying for a heterosexual man such as myself, I repeatedly find myself searching for the remote control whenever her video is on TV. It is probably more to do with the fact I don’t find her particularly interesting, and I’m sure most males are turned on by her persona - image et al. I just
find it all a bit dull myself. (CA). Release Date: October 3rd. Link: Fansite:
http://www.rachelstevensonline.com/

RICKY MARTIN - I DON'T CARE
That pretty much sums up my feelings of his return. He’s been gone for what, five years now? Backed by Amerie (sang a repetitive song that’s been overplayed to death and shouldn’t have done so well) and Fat Joe (rambles some tedious rap that dulls the senses), and the clean cut image has gone for a more rugged look, but essentially it’s another ex boy-bander grown up releasing nothing of note, so why should any of us care? Never mind Ricky. (CA). Release Date: 3rd October.  Link: Fansite:
http://www.rmtee.com/

BLOC PARTY - TWO MORE YEARS
That sounds like a threat to me. Most bands last around three or so years before either finding longterm success or splitting up. I hope it's the latter with Bloc Party, and I hope it's sooner than later too. Like Test Icicles, it's not that they're bad, they're certainly not committing any crimes against music, but most of their material is so turgid and unoriginal. This is one of their quieter efforts, but no better for it. (AF). Release Date: 3rd October. Link: Fansite:
http://www.blocparty.net/

JAMES BLUNT - HIGH
You know, I could go down to the local pub and hear countless singer songwriters singing and strumming an acoustic guitar with two or three chords to a verse, minimal changes and monosyllabic choruses. So why, oh why, has James Blunt had a number one with virtually the same act? Why isn’t he still down his local peddling his average sub-par Travis whiny emotionless boring banal nonsense to drunks and chavettes? Sometimes the music industry and the record-buying public can be such evil co-conspirators for allowing the epitome of drab coffee table music becoming number 1. In both a single and album no less. Characterless, so just avoid like the plague if you have any sense. (CA). Release Date: October 3rd. Link: Official Site:
http://www.jamesblunt.com/

ROBBIE WILLIAMS - TRIPPING
Stick a calypso beat to make something a white artist sound like they’ve spent a month relaxing in the cayman islands - in the hands of most people, it might work. Most people aren’t Robbie Williams. He croons, he talks in the middle eight, he puts in his trademark ‘for the man’ estuary English lyrics like “ ‘ave a word”. It’s just awful pretentiousness - like your dad dancing at a wedding. (CA). I want to like Robbie for eschewing the conventional pop star route, and at least trying something new. But I can't when it's this bad. As Craig says, it's pretentious, and surprisingly unlikable, and ultimately pointless. Avoid unless you want everyone you know in your life to laugh at you. (AF). Release Date: October 31st. Link: Fansite: http://www.robbiewilliams-info.com/

THE CARDIGANS - I NEED SOME FINE WINE, AND YOU NEED TO BE NICER
Long Gone Before Daylight was an under-rated masterpiece - it had the craft and intricacy of a James Taylor record, and as much emotion. But they did show on that record they could get heavy, albeit in a melodic AOR kind of way. This is much more maniacal. Moving back to the more accessible Gran Tourismo briefly for the opening riff, it then embarks on a casual fit of unbridled destruction - pretty much the toddler trashing his bedroom and smiling that he doesn’t care he’s defaced walls, deposited indelible stains on the carpet and left his parents with the cleaning up to do. Lots and lots of fun.Taken from new album Super Extra Gravity, and an accompanying tongue-in-cheek video laden with black humour can be seen on their official website:
http://www.cardigans.com. Release Date: October 3rd.

STARSAILOR - IN THE CROSSFIRE

Starsailor had a choice to make. They could continue in the vein of their last album with soft, lilting, but instantly forgettable tunes, and inevitably be dropped by their record label, or they could come back with a song which grabbed you by the balls, and didn't let go until you passed out unconcious. And kudos to them for at least trying the latter. But to be honest it doesn't quite work, it's of interest, for sure, but I'm not convinced it'll save them from eventual ignomy. Give it a chance though, perhaps it'll improve with a few more listens. That's just something I'm not sure I can be arsed to do right now though. (AF). Relocating to Belfast is clearly the muse for this collection of offerings by James Walsh, after the lush orchestral Spector “Silence is Easy”, this seems more pained, but it is so different from anything they’ve previously done? Well no. It’s just as one-dimensional as the majority of their previous work. Probably the merest glimpse of a raw quality occurred in debut single “Fever” and “Good Souls”, but since then it’s been this gradual decline into the banal songwriting that Martin, Keane boys, Lightbody and whoever else comes along to fit in to that category produce. (CA).  Release Date: October 3rd. Link: Fansite:
http://www.starsailor.8k.com/

DEPECHE MODE - PRECIOUS
Basildon’s finest return with the first single of new album “Playing The Angel”. The lyrics are as morose as ever, but musically the pace has been enlivened after the organic-sounding Exciter, which some felt was a tad pedestrian. Not as left-field as the Ultra album, more on a par with Violator, and seems comparatively as relaxed and ‘now’ as New Order’s Waiting For The Siren’s Call. Also worth looking out for the various remixes that may accompany this. (CA). Release Date: October 2nd. Link: Fansite:

SEPTEMBER 2005

SUGABABES - PUSH THE BUTTON
There was a deep-seated misery and melancholy about Sugababes that made them so appealing as an all-girl band when they first broke with Overload and Run for Cover, then Siobhan left and they recruited Heidi and went all sassy and poppy, and sampled New Model Army in the process. This is a continuation of that ideal, and the moody brooding has been replaced with an assured confidence and light accessible pop feel.  It makes it more throwaway in terms of message, but it’s got more chance of getting to number one, which is primarily what all girl bands are designed to do, surely? In any case it serves it’s purpose, and is decent without being memorable in a life-changing way. (CA). Release Date: 26th September. Link: Fansite: http://www.sugababesuk.com/

LIBERTY X FEATURING REVEREND RUN - SONG 4 LOVERS
RUN DMC revolutionised the world of rap in the eighties, and assisted in the rejuvenated interest of legendary rockers Aerosmith. Sadly they’ve failed to resurrect the brilliance of My a.d.i.d.a.s. with Crown Royal, and the sad passing of Jam Master Jay means the engine room responsible for their many hits will never be replaced. You would have thought retirement the logical step, but whilst DMC has decided to take a backseat, Reverend Run has decided to spread his word beyond his local church. To be honest, you wish he hadn’t. Of all the artists to cross-over with, he probably couldn’t have picked anyone worse than Liberty X - despite being one of the more interesting pop acts three years ago, they have still relied on one decent tune, and a cover of a mantronix tun - hardly pop pedigree. It’s no surprise that such artificial-sounding gospel like this sounded less cheesy on Sister Act.  An impressive feat, but for the wrong reasons. (CA). Release Date: September 19th. Link: Official Site: http://www.libertyx.co.uk/

MYSTERY JETS - YOU CAN'T FOOL ME DENNIS
We reviewed the Mystery Jets a few months ago, when they'd only released online singles, and been ridiculously positive about them. With good reason too, they do indie pop with panache, and in a time when far too many bands are trying to sound similar to Eighties' miserablists like Joy Division and Depeche Mode, it's delightful to hear something as upbeat and enjoyable as this. Of course this might be to their detriment - 'the kids' seem to be enjoying being depressed right now if the indie bands who break in to the charts are anything to go by, but we really hope this won't be the case. (AF). Release Date: September 12th. Link: Official Site: http://www.mysteryjets.com/

JEM - WISH I
You'll know this if you were one of the few who watched Celebrity Love Island, for it's that tacky, insubstantial piece of crap's theme tune. And you'll already know how annoying it is, sounding like the musical equivalent of a thirteen year old in love for the first time, ie. painfully wishy washy. And you'll know already that you have absolutely no plans to buy it. So I'll stop now. (AF). Release Date: 12th September. Link: Official Site:
http://www.jem-music.net/

ARCADE FIRE - REBELLION (LIES)
Back in July we made Arcade Fire's Cold Wind the single of the month. And now the backlash begins? Not quite, though this does feel like the band on auto-pilot. Of course it's ridiculously superior to most of the singles released this month - and most of the bands around at the moment - but it feels a little bit too familiar, a little bit heard it all before. Hopefully this is a brief lull, and whatever they come up with next will resume in astonishing us. (AF). Release Date: September 5th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.arcadefire.com/

FRANZ FERDINAND - DO YOU WANT TO?
In about ten years time indie kids will look back on Franz Ferdinand with a wry smile, as the Britpop kids of the nineties do nowadays with Cast and Menswear. They'll remember them with casual fondness, but as an aimless indie-pop group, more than capable of chucking out some catchy tunes but with some truly weak lyricism going on at the same time. Do You Want To? is the epitome of a Franz Ferdinand tune - Catchy, repetitive, slightly annoying after the third time you hear it - and yet still destined to be played at student discos across the land ad nauseum for at least the next twelve months. If that floats your boat, then go for it. If not, just wait a few years and buy it for nostalgia value in a charity shop for 20p. (AF). I find myself agreeing with Alex here. I go back to stuff I liked in between 1995-1998; Terrorvision, Echobelly, and Sleeper, among others. For the most part they all seem dated. I can't even listen to the first two Mansun albums without feeling a tad narcoleptic, and those were records I loved way back when. And here, it is only the second album stage but this already feels tedious. It’s only the second listen, that's not supposed to happen?  Take Me Out at least had a hidden message about pistols at dawn, but turned into a ‘going out’ anthem. 'You're so lucky, lucky lucky' are the most unimaginative lyrics I've heard since Travis's 'Turn turn turn turn yada yada yada.' This just seems utterly pointless and the most magpie of all tracks they’ve done - stealing from Talking Heads we know about, but aping videos from bands like Pavement and The Breeders, and sounding a touch like My Sharona into the bargain?  It’s too easy, and I thought they’d come back with something better than this, but unfortunately the bubble has burst. (CA). Release Date: 19th September. Link: Fansite:

OCTOBER’S SINGLE OF THE MONTH: RAMMSTEIN - BENZIN
The general consensus amongst Rammstein’s fanbase was that Reise Reise was more artistic, and not as hard as ‘Mutter’.  Their prayers may well have been answered with this new offering from the forthcoming Rosenrot (Rotten Rose) album.  Benzin (Gasoline) continues an obsession with fire, and it full-throttle opening is in stark contrast to the preceding torch-lighting ballad Ohne Dick (Without You) which was more a cinematic love-theme than an industrial metal stomp fest that we’ve come to expect from Till Lindemann and co. Taken from the same recording sessions as Reise Reise, it has taken on a slight evolution from that album’s style, and adopted a more frenetic full-on guitar assault. Don’t expect them to dump the repetitive riffs for tunes just yet. (CA). Release Date: October 17th. Link: Official Site: http://www.rammstein.com/

SEPTEMBER'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH: COLDPLAY - FIX YOU
So we've criticised Bright Eyes, Beck, and Interpol of late, yet heaped praise upon Coldplay? Yep, that seems to be the case. Coldplay are a band that I always feel the need to apologise for liking, and all too serious muso types will no doubt hate it for being accessible and painless on the ears, but sod it, they've come back with another great album, with Fix You being the best song on it. Simplicity's the key here, with Martin's heartfelt and direct lyrics surely breaking even the hardest of hearts. (AF). Release Date: 5th September.
