OCTOBER 2004

SNOW PATROL - HOW TO BE DEAD
I loved Spitting Games and Chocolate, they were distinctly Lightbodys. This seems to descend where Run first left us, dull Coldplay balladry. One Chris Martin is enough, even when he is penning Jamelia tracks. Hopefully this will be the last track released off Final Straw, and they make the next record a departure. Here's hoping. (CA). Release Date: 25th October. Link:

GRAHAM COXON - FREAKIN' OUT
Every so often I start to write a review and think, well, what can I say other than it's okay. It's fine. It's slightly bland. And this is the case here, which is a surprise, as much of the material from Coxon's latest album is rather cute and lovely, but this, a thrashier moment from the ex-Blur guitarist, doesn't inspire anything except boredom. Ah, well, everyone's allowed to make the odd mistake from time to time. Let's just hope it doesn't happen again. (AF). Release Date: October 25th. Link: Fansite:

THE DEPARTURE - BE MY ENEMY
But you don't inspire enough hatred for us to be your enemy. "If you don't like what you hear, at least get something out of it" the lead singer warbles, but really, I'd much rather spend my time ignoring them, it certainly takes up a hell of a lot less energy. He also sings "You don't care, you don't care" and, hey, he's right. And you won't either. (AF). Release Date: October 18th. Link: Official Site:

ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE IMPOSTERS - MONKEY TO MAN
We had the introverted When I was Cruel, then the gooey North (written obviously for his bride), but now Declan Patrick Aloysius McManus aka Elvis Costello has returned with a single to really blow anything else away. Reading the album reviews for the new album The Delivery Man, you'd expect something great from the Brutal Youth or King of America era, and it is certainly is the case here. I know I keep harping on about how pop songs should sound, but trust me - this is it. Showing the sort of energy that a 26 year old should exhaust, never mind a 50 year old, Elvis and the Imposters have returned with what some sad cynics have called self-parody. It is rather a brilliant crafted darwinesque rant on enclosure and contains the top line "Even after all the misery he's caused, he denies he's descended from the Dinosaurs." The last time they sounded so poppy, catchy, infectious was on 13 steps lead down off Brutal Youth, but this is more tuneful and less of the nihilism. Flanked by Attractions stalwarts Pete Thomas, Steve Nieve and settled bassist Davey Faragher (whose brilliant walking basslines leave you asking Bruce who?). It won't appeal to the kids, but then who cares about them, when you look at the Top ten. Everyone must seek this out. (CA). Release Date: 4th October. THE RASMUS - FIRST DAY OF MY LIFE
And the incredibly popular Swedish goths are back, even though it feels like they never went away. Adored by many, well, by many miserable mascara wearing teenagers anyhow, I really can't see theNo attraction. More than most goth bands they suffer from 'over-serious miserablism' syndrome, and predictably because of this all their songs sound the same. It's barable, but only in the same way that watching Eastenders on a Sunday afternoon when you're still too hungover to get out of bed is. (AF). Release Date: 25th October. Link: Fansite:

DANIEL BEDINGFIELD - NOTHING HURTS LIKE LOVE
And this guy should know, considering how he broke ten neck bones in that infamous car crash last year. So it's official, love hurts more than nearly having your head ripped off from the rest of your body. Always nice to know. Anyway, this is surprisingly okay, ridiculously melodramatic, but it's sung with passion and though cliche filled, he just about gets away with it. (AF). Release Date: 25th October. Link: Official Site:
http://www.danielbedingfield.com/

THE HIVES - TWO TIMING TOUCH AND BROKEN BONES
It's impossible not to want to grab The Hives' Pelle and give him a big old cheeky hug, the lovable idiot that he is. And live The Hives are unresistable, with bolshy banter backing up their sixties style rock tunes. Throwaway they might be, but that's not always such a bad thing. Alas this latest single is a little too throwaway though, sounding like it was put together in about four point two minutes, and lacking the charm of most of their records. A shame, but hey, hopefully just a minor one. (AF). Release Date: October 18th. Link: Official Site:

THE DONNAS - FALL BEHIND ME
Whilst comparable embryos like Avril, Ashlee, and whoever else, wants to pretend they're rock, The Donnas have been attempting to emulate their heroes L7 and ACDC for nearly a decade now. Their previous form has all the fun you'd expect from a bunch of twentysomething rock chicks. 40 days and 40 Nights was clearly a road song, talking about sexploits etc. Take it Off and Who Invited You were examples of perfectly formed pop-rock basically with nothing more interesting than drinking, and partying. And it is pretty much the same here. As with the aforementioned tracks, it is pretty good. I'm quite the sucker for a retro rock records, what with the emergence of The Datsuns, and The Darkness and various bands aping Angus Young, so it's refreshing to see a female imitating 'the schoolboy' and his mouthings. In the absence of a Black Crowes record appearing anytime soon, this would be a natural successor. Whilst Ashlee gets endless airplay for such a tame record, it's worth investing your money in something that's the real deal. Well, closer to it at least. Taken from new album Gold Medal. (CA). Release Date: 11th October. Link: Official Site:
http://www.thedonnas.com/

THE ZUTONS - DON'T EVER THINK
The bastard children of Gomez and The Coral continue their crusade to make everyone nod their heads appreciatively at their gigs. There's nothing wrong with The Zutons, bar perhaps their penchant for overly repetitive chorus's, and it's hard to dislike them at all, in fact there's no reason too. But equally, there's no reason to adore them. Yet again we're in 'seen it all before' territory, with a side order of 'often done better too'. (AF). Release Date: October 4th. Link: Fansite:
http://www.thezutons.net/

KINGS OF LEON – BUCKET
Whilst everyone else lauded over the first album, nothing else grabbed my attention. The face fuzz has gone, and the hype has now been deflated. Thing is, the song is not bad. It's not great sure, and not really groundbreaking, but it's not that far removed from anything else they've done bar Molly's Chambers.  It just seems you shave and you everyone loses interest in you.  Perhaps grow the beards back and come back with a few more ideas next time. (CA). Release Date: 25th October. Link: Fansite: http://www.flirtatious.org/kol/

TRAVIS – A WALK IN THE SUN
Imagine a Brit Tv producer creating a show to be the equivalent of Northern Exposure, Ed, or Due South, and you could easily imagine Travis would form part of the soundtrack.  They are quirky, but ultimately amiable pleasant blokes when all is said and done.  So it came as a surprise when 12 memories hit, and despite my initial review, songs like "Re-offender" had a lot more about them than the boring and repetitive "Sing", and "Why does it always rain on me?". This is cheery enough and sounds like a Cosmic Rough Riders B-side with that West Coast Scot indie that breeds up there with the Highland sheep.  It even makes the attempt to rock out a tad in the bridge, sticking the overdrive on, but then the ending lets the song down a touch. It seems anticlimactic, and suggests that less thought has obviously gone into the now compulsory new single to add on to the best of, but then most new singles are an afterthought on these sorts of albums anyway. As it's intended to make up the numbers of a best, I would be inclined to give it 7 out of 10. As a part of the back catalogue, it is far more average. (CA). Release Date: October 18th. WILLIAM SHATNER (FEAT.BEN FOLDS) – COMMON PEOPLE

Captain Kirk boldly goes where he once went before. Bad cover versions. Only this time, he didn't quite live up to expectations. Imagine if you will, Rex Harrison performing with Jerry Lee Lewis, and you may have an idea of the sound they're going for here.  Shatner is his usual deadpan self, but actually cuts a pretty good vocal, but the interest is kept by Ben Folds punky keyboards, pacy drums and edgy guitars; this recalls his 'fear of pop' period, which makes the whole record far more pacy and entertaining than Pulp's version, even if it lacks the kitsch britishness of Jarvis and co. The Nihilism certainly keeps your interest much more than the one-joke plodding of his parody of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Probably worth playing 3 or 4 times before you start hating it. (CA). THE LIBERTINES - WHAT BECAME OF THE LIKELY LADS?
First The Thrills wonder where Corey Haim is, now The Libertines have queries over The Likely Lads, can't these bands just use google? Sorry, sorry, I should have resisted, but just couldn't. Anyway, alas this is a tad disappointing. The Libertines are at their best when it sounds like they've just thrown a song together in a matter of minutes, but this feels like it was slowly forced out of the boys, and lacks the trademark eclecticism we've come to expect from them. Compared to most other songs released this month it's still pretty good, but not just as fine as it should have been. (AF). Release Date: October 18th. ROBBIE WILLIAMS - RADIO
Poor, Poor Robbie. The backlash (albeit minor) seems to have begun against him. Most people I speak to that have heard this track are not sold on it. The crux of this negativity is simple, it's a touch too left-field. Imagine Coronation Street or Eastenders introducing Ron Jeremy as a new character and you'd basically have it.  It is a measure of seduction and synth packaged for a cheeky, yet popular man of the people who's only to keen to push the boundaries. And it hasn't worked. It's been marketed to the hilt as you would expect, but it's fallen flatter than a Posh Spice record. I have an iota of sympathy for Mr Williams in this instance. Whilst I can't stand the bloke or anything he's done (bar two singles), I have to applaud him for at least trying something different. On the other hand, I would be quite glad to see Radio fail.  I would be ecstatic to see him really struggle with sales. I would be delighted to see the bubble burst. You see, Radio is just as blatantly arrogant as Rock DJ was; sadly that was lapped up by the nation, sane people excluded. I'll be honest, if he finished up his chart career now, jumped aboard a cruise ship and started doing cabaret with his Dad until he dies, then and only then, will I applaud him. (CA). Ever hear a song and think, surely it can't be by a certain artist? That they just surely couldn't release a song this bad? Not that I have a lot of time for Mr Williams, but from time to time he's put out a song that's been fun enough. Like, erm, Angels. And that other one which was okay. But this? This is a mix of electro synth pop, with a horribly eighties sound, and presumably what he thought the teenage girls who love him to pieces would want to hear. But it's not. Oh no. What it is, quite shockingly, is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. More painful to your ears than trying to stop a speeding train with the side of your head. Yep. That bad. (AF). Release Date: October 4th. Link: Fansite:

DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS - LOUNGER
Another Eighties influenced track, and less fashionable band Big Country immediately springs to mind. There is definitely some Stuart Adamson inspiration in that vocal - I personally preferred his guitar stuff in the Skids. But I digress. Following Godhopping, this is just as much of a nod to Teardrop Explodes and bands of that ilk and era.  If you don't wish to relive that, fine, but at least here you can appreciate there is an element of their personality amongst the influences, or amongst lesser bands, blatant rip-offs. Why is wasn't released two months earlier is a mystery, but then again, we do appear to be having our Summer in September after
all. Anyway, good solid song from a solid band with a promising start. (CA). Release Date: 4th October. Link: Official Site:

THE STROKES - THE END HAS NO END
Now this has never happened before with me, but the Strokes second album gradually fell in my estimation each time I listened to it. Often the reverse happens, but this hasn't before. It's appealing enough, but after a while I found myself crying out for something a little more eclective, a song which would reach out and grab me and just not let go. And this is the weakest of all the singles from the album so far, with lyrics like "Won't you take a walk outside? Oh no! / Can't ya find another guy? Oh no! / One and six three. What's that sound? Oh no! / Keeping down the underground. Oh no!" I can't imagine anyone actually falling in love with the song and wanting to play it constantly. But hey, maybe that's just me. (AF). SEPTEMBER 2004

MINNIE DRIVER – EVERYTHING I’VE GOT IN MY POCKET
Unlike most actors/actresses who release records, she’s got the kind of voice which really impresses, a husky, seductive vocal that suggests that with the right material she could be of interest. Alas this isn’t the right material, it’s a dull, seen it all before, annoyingly insipid number. Ah well, at least she’s got the acting career to fall back on. (AF). Release Date: 27th September. Link: Fansite: http://minniedriver.net/

ASHLEE SIMPSON – PIECES OF ME
Another one of the Simpson clan tries their hand at a music career. Unlike Jessica's god awful cover of Berlin's personal nadir - Take my breath away - Ashlee opts for being as punky as Avril Lavigne is goth-rock and comes across more like Suzanne Vega but without the great songs, great lyrics, and all round talent.  If you are a AOR MOR fanatic, this will suit you down to the ground.  For those of us that search for meanings in our songs, this will seem quite banal. (CA). Release Date: 20th September. Link: Official Site:
http://www.ashleesimpsonmusic.com/

MANIC STREET PREACHERS - THE LOVE OF RICHARD NIXON
It seems clear to me that it is not so much their love of Richard Nixon, but of Goldfrapp that seems to be the main influence here. A bold step, considering the last attempt at stray from the punky, ballsy power-chord ridden anthems was This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours. That album spoke volumes about how much better songwriters they were with age, but clearly annoyed the hardcore feather boa-weilding inner circle. This may cause the same reaction to the purists. I am thankfully, not so blinkered in my perspective. It definitely feels more introspective, pensive, darker, whilst being as poppy as Nicky Wire had intimated over the past few months. It may be that fans and critics were crying out for You Love Us, Motorcycle Emptiness, The Holy Bible or even Everything Must Go Mk II. But as Radiohead have proven, you can still produce a strong album without regurgitating past glories. Hopefully Life Blood will be met with the same enthusiasm. (CA). Release Date: 27th September. Link: Fansite: http://www.manicsonline.com/

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL - I ONLY WANT YOU
Normally I wouldn't baulk at the sound of something new by Josh Homme. Usually his side project turns out something decent, even if his best stuff will always be with Queens of the Stone Age. And for a sticks man, he beats them with the best of them. The main problem with Eagles of Death Metal is all that's come before them. All the minimalist blues. Take the White Stripes and stick the bass player of the darkness and have him as a frontman and you've basically got EODM.  Well, there are a few different nuances, but approximately it's similar. It's also quite boring. Something i never expected to say about a Josh Homme project. Perhaps they'll be different live? (CA). Release Date:  Link: Official Site:

R.E.M. - LEAVING NEW YORK
Hands up all who had bets on them having a 'new sound'? Mugs. Seriously, not since New Adventures in Hi-Fi have they really attempted a diverse change in sound, and on the evidence of this, the new album will be no exception. Then again, why would they need to? They do almost Everything with such aplomb. Imitation of Life had a ropey lyric with regards to sliced bread, but since then they've come through practically unscathed. Even Bad Day was one of the most uplifting and fun tracks they'd done in a long time, though it channeled it's the end of the world as we know it without any subtle disguise. As far as the new single goes, it feels more akin to Daysleeper, with strings attached to flesh out the empathy, as has been done effectively since Everybody Hurts. What comes across is another amiable, well crafted song.  Nothing profound but certainly up there with Embrace's Gravity in terms of niceness. (CA). Release Date: 27th September. Link: Fansite:

THE ORDINARY BOYS - SEASIDE
Named after a Smiths song, sounding like a punchier version of Gene, it is clear where the Ordinary Boys want to be. Riding the coat-tails of Steven Patrick Morrissey in their promotional buildup, they actually had a fun infectious hit with Talk Talk Talk, and this seems more of the same. This is more a straight up and down indie song, whereas Talk Talk Talk was Mozza meets Adam and the Ants.  It remains as catchy, without becoming irritating, and that is pretty much it.  Where they go from here, who can say? Hopefully they will descend from the shadows of the Smiths and show us a bit of their character next time. (CA). Release Date: September 20th. Link: Official Site:

DURAN DURAN - SUNRISE
My earliest childhood memory is singing "Please Please tell me now" with my brother next to a jukebox in Tenby. Two reasons for mentioning this. Firstly, it is possible for even me to have had a dodgy taste in pop music at an early age. Secondly, For all their fluff, the Durannies actually wrote some pretty decadent pop. Now, 25 years later - new album from the original line-up, and a Brit Awards performance have been gearing them up for a major attempt at a Lazarus moment. It may well have been fine in the early eighties, but the gaps within the record and the withdrawn production seemed lost, and now we've got is Le Bon sounding as good as ever, and Rhodes and the Taylors' showing the Dandy Warhols how it's done. Unfortunately, It looks like Courtney Taylor-Taylor should have been the one doleing out the lessons. Sunrise is a 1986 record produced to 2004 standards, and that's probably the problem.  It's uplifting, sure, and the funk is growing on me, but either them or their producers (Don Gilmore and Rich Harrison) - notorious (no pun intended) for producing Usher, Avril Lavigne, and Linkin Park have decided more is more, when it is ultimately less. They seemed to have a crammed a lot of sounds into it, but it's ended up sounding like a Nelly Furtado record.  Ordinary World may well have been their last hurrah in terms of classy songwriting. This is a return to the fluffy bubblegum era, but it's clearly not as good. For a great pop band, this is decent but average by comparison. (CA). Release Date: 20th September. Link: Fansite:
http://www.duranduran.co.uk/

IAN BROWN - GET WHAT YOU WANT
But this isn't what I want. Not in the slightest. I've always had at least some respect for Ian Brown's solo work, unlike many of his peers he's tried to come up with a new sound from time to time, and F.E.A.R., gimmicky as it was, became one of those tunes that got stuck in my head for far too long. But this is a dreary, dirgey effort, devoid of anything remotely appealing. A shame. Hopefully his next release will restore my faith in him. (AF). Release Date: September 13th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.ianbrown.co.uk/

BRIAN MCFADDEN - REAL TO ME
Former Westlife man attempts to offer a real departure from Westlife by giving us...A Westlife song. Well only just. As much the disheveled gorilla may think he has discarded his pretty boy squeaky clean take your grandmother across the pelican crossing boyband roots, this is really Westlife gone melancholy. The poor lad laments that his price of fame is lack of reality, and to be honest, it's not the only thing he's lacking.  A career in soap land beckons. (CA). Release Date: September 6th. Link: Fansite:
http://www.brian-mcfadden.com/

THE CHEEKY GIRLS - CHEEKY FLAMENCO
Think of all of those who have been dropped by their record companies post initial Pop Idol fame. Yep. There's a lot, aren't there. But for some insane reason, despite reasonably pitiful chart placings of late, the worst of the lot strangely haven't been. And this? Oh come on, there's no need, just look up 'bowel shatteringly awful' in a thesaurus to see how I feel about it. (AF). Release Date: September 27th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.cheeky-girls.com/

MUSE - BUTTERFLIES AND HURRICANES
Fifth single from the phenomenal Absolution.  David Hepworth of Word Magazine casually described Muse 'as a band you have to sign up for'. Well, I've committed to them by buying all their albums when they've released them, seen them live, and watched Hullabaloo, so it is fair to say I'm signed up. Personally, I can't see a problem investing time and money in a band of this ilk. They are the most entertaining UK live act today, and seem to churn out an opus or two such as this, spread liberally amongst the hard-hitting tremolo-picking anthems Matt Bellamy appears to adore, and form one of the best albums of the last twelve months.  Butterflies and Hurricanes is monumental. It is Queen meets Paranoid Android with Rachmaninov gliding across the piano keys in the background, and the strings of Rammstein intensifying the dark, brooding energy vibrating under your skin. It's great, and the video gives the song a renewed vigour often lacking when a record like this has been on the market for so long.  Given all the recent happenings, hope the downtime after this and Apocalypse Please allows them to produce something even better, or at the very least consolidate their excellence. (CA). Release Date: September 13th. Link: Fansite:

GREEN DAY- AMERICAN IDIOT
After the 'mature' but disappointing sound of Warning that had many ardent fans losing interest (I actually liked it), Bille Joe, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool have gone back to Basket Case. Well, around that area at least.  It seems less catchy than Basket Case and much more nihilistic and unapologetic; clearly targeting the President and the propaganda of the U.S media that the majority of Americans lap up like xenophobic, bigoted cretins. Busted and McFly may have latched on to that sound and diluted it so much it's practically transparent, Green Day remain angry. There is concentrated aggression in those veins of theirs, and it's as coarse and opaque as ever. Thank God. (CA). Release Date: September 13th. Link: Fansite:
http://www.greenday.net/

MCFLY - THAT GIRL
Just to once again prove that I don't hate all pop music, I thought I should write out a quick review of this. And it's great. Short, to the point, guitar driven fun which once again sounds like a britpop tune. It actually goes somewhere makes a refreshing change too, and unlike Busted, the lyrics never become gratingly embarrassing as well. (AF).  As has been mentioned in what seems a timeless amount of times, I very rarely disagree with Alex over a particular sound or song.  Off hand, I can think of three instances.  One is Prince, the second is Eighties pop, and the third would be this. Whilst it is catchy enough, by any other name there would be grandmas waving their arms in delight as the MOR-aping C&W licks are interspersed amongst Shania Twain loving line dancing freaks cavorting with vacant, but gleeful faces displayed as the very soul of music is ripped out of their spines. This stuff, Busted, and Joss Stone all rely heavily on styles of yesteryear, but the production is so devoid of any intrigue, you are just left with labotomising Commercial radio manna from heaven.  It is such a worry that the public are fascinated with plastic cartoons masquerading as bands that would be closer in type to The Monkees. Pop music should have more character, personality, and individuality. This lacks all three. Avoid. (CA). Release Date: 6th September. Link: Official Site:

THE MUSIC - FREEDOM FIGHTERS
There's something about the Music which screams one-trick pony. Either that or it's Robert Harvey. Whilst Harvey yells down the mic to you, there is that constant niggle in the back of your mind, whispering 'Zeppelin copyists laden with trancey beats. Don't invest much time in them.' But there is something to be said for The Music's music. Robert Harvey wants to be Plant so much, whilst retaining his Bez-like funky dancing - he clearly is in love with his northern roots. Adam Nuttall is no Jimmy Page either. More of an inanimate, simplified riffmeister. Then you realise, that is their whole charm. There is something so inexplicably plausible about The Music that makes you yearn for tracks like "Getaway", "Take the long road and walk it" and the like to be played in banging nightclubs on a saturday night, lapped up by more than you average long-haired indie-loving baggy clothed youngster. This is no exception. Freedom Fighters suggests the mould is not about to be broken just yet. Nor should it on this evidence. OK, there is very little new apart from the cleared up production of Korn/Rage producer Brendan O'Brien, yet there is something so unmistakably entrancing and energetic about this. Use this to uplift you in those dark, desperate, boring days at the office. Or after a Keane track. (CA). Release Date: 6th September. Link: Official Site:

OCTOBER'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH:
ELECTRIC SIX - VIBRATOR
Thought the Electric Six boys had run out of steam post-Gay Bar? Yeah, we had too, especially considering the limpness of their last single. But this sees them return with a song which'll no doubt end up being played at every student union across the country. It's got a little more substance sonically then their past hits, with a rockier edge, but it's equally as fun - how can you not adore a song which includes lines like "She don't she don't she don't need no artificial stimulator non-organic excavator" in it? You can't can you? Plus, it's free to download from their official site now, which makes it even lovelier. (AF). Release Date: 18th October. Link: Official Site: http://www.electric6.com/

SEPTEMBER'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH:
THE BEASTIE BOYS - TRIPLE TROUBLE
Urgent Memo to Goldie Lookin' Chain!!: This is how to produce a funny rap record.  Following on from the excellent Ch-Ch-Check it out, this from Mike D, MCA and King Ad-Rock is pure class.  Starting off with a Dick Van Dyke Mary Poppins pastiche, we lead in to a typically quirky latin rhythm using a cowbell straight out of left-field to make sure convention is nowhere near the agenda. The Beasties wax lyrical about being them I guess, rhyming among other things la-te with Wile E. Coyote and Party and Bacardi. Hell, One even uses 'cheddar' to illustrate his rhymes are 'better'.  It is just such a feel-good, fun record. Complemented by a top video having them re-captured by a Sasquatch. Soon as I have the cash I'll be buying To The 5 Boroughs. You should too if you haven't already. (CA). Release Date: September 13th. Link: Official Site: http://www.beastieboys.com/
