KINGS OF CONVENIANCE - I'D RATHER DANCE WITH YOU
There are a lot of things I like about the Kings. I loved Toxic Girl at the time when it and Turin Brakes were lumped together so NME marketers could stick the dire New Acoustic Movement label on them. Erlend does some cracking vocals on the Royksopp album. But when the Misread first hit, I thought it was a bit wispy and a bit of nothing. It didn't really gather me in to its arms with any substance, strength or interest. This succeeds where Misread failed. Backed by strings for a fuller sound, it sounds like an interesting Air record. Not the one with all the whistling. I heard this on Ken Bruce's show driving home on the motorway, and whilst I like the odd bit of urban stuff played on Radio 1, I wish dreamy, yet slightly melancholic laments such as this were gracing the playlist. I mean, there's only so much Usher a person can take. (CA). Release Date: August 23rd. Link: Fansite:

PRODIGY - GIRLS
There is the purist inside of me that wishes Liam Howlett had used his own name instead of the Prodigy moniker. Granted, he was the driving force behind the band, and Keith and Maxim's total contribution would be vocals. In many cases, it was the vocals that brought the intensity to the track. Poison, and the seminal Firestarter and Breathe from Fat of the Land, proved they were a band, even if on the face of it, Leeroy was the electronica equivalent of Jason Orange. Well, Leeroy's side project has yet to see the light of day in the mainstream; Maxim's solo and Flint's records flopped embarrassingly, so it's down to Mr. Howlett to remind us how talented the Prodigy were. It is fair to say he delivers in abundance. Erasing Baby's got a temper from your mind, this is thankfully a complete evolution of sound, and not just Fat of the Land part 2. The new album focuses on remixes, samples, beats, but sounds more like a 2manyDjs record than from the stable of the electronic punks. The new single is no exception. Girls is the Prodigy listening to Junior Senior with the Daewele Brothers at the mixing desk. It is nothing short of fantastic, and feels like a departure of sorts. More of a natural progression from Charley and Out of Space than Breathe and Firestarter. One thing is certain, Howlett is back on form. (CA). Release Date: August 30th. Link: Fansite:

THE FINN BROTHERS - WON'T GIVE IN
Musical brothers that see eye to eye sporadically return with their first collaboration since 1996. A brief history; Tim Finn founded Split Enz in the 1970's, roped his younger brother Neil in the early eighties. The younger Finn went on to write the band's biggest hit. Neil then founded Crowded House with Paul Hester and Nick Seymour. Had some memorable hits of the 80's and 90's, reaching prominence when elder brother joined for 1991's Woodface. Tim Finn left just as soon as he joined to continue his solo showcase, while the 'House continued till 1996, leaving Neil to pursue a solo career, with two pretty great solo albums under his belt up until the present. The Brothers Finn reunite following the loss of their much-adored musically inspirational mother, and this single acts as a fitting introduction to new album Everyone is Here; their musical eulogy. It's a very personal record. Emotional, melancholic, and touching as you would expect. Musically it is a continuation of the sound evoked on Neil Finn's One Nil record, but the lyrics are deeply philosophical and depressing at times. Understandably so. "Even if time is a just a flicker of light, then we all have to die alone" just sums up their frame of mind. Nevertheless, if you've lost a loved one recently, you will definitely identify with this. A-listed by Radio 2, and due to session for Gideon Coe on 6 music, it's manna for those of us that appreciate mature songwriting. It deserves to do well.(CA). Release Date: 16th. August. FRANZ FERDINAND - MICHAEL
Oh how their time is up. And bloody quickly too, considering the hype surrounding them at the beginning of the year. But more than any band of late, they suffer from 'every song sounds the bloody same' syndrome, and it wasn't that great a sound in the first place either. Lyrically pointless, this isn't a homoerotic paeon to a guy called Michael according to their lead singer Alex Kapranos, but hell, it sure sounds like one. Whatever it is, it just goes nowhere, and you'll not want to hear it more than once. If that. (AF). Release Date: August 16th. Link: Fansite:

NATASHA BEDINGFIELD - THESE WORDS
When I hear music, I want to be inspired. I want to hear someone put in to words everyday life in such a way that it's genuinely touching, funny, heartbreaking. Any kind of emotion really. And not just lead too monotonous tedium upon hearing it. Which to be honest is what I feel when hearing this kind of pop-nonsense. It frustrates because the best pop can be beautifully delicious to dance around too, but oh how rare it is to hear any these days. Which is kind of sad, really. (AF). Release Date: August 16th. THE KILLERS - ALL THESE THINGS THAT I'VE DONE
The third single from Las Vegas haired up rockers The Killers sees a downshift in mood from the far more frenetic Mr Brightside. Don't be expecting to throw yourself round with gusto on the dance floor to this one people. It's far more soulful than Mr B and last single Somebody told me, probably due to it's multi tempo and the vocal additions of the Sweet Inspirations gospel choir, alleviating this Killers tune to loftier heights than you might expect. It's a great example of breathless indie pop at it's finest and you can't deny the swaggering catchyness of the middle breakdown where Brandon intones "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" and the gospel choir kicks in with it's two penneth. Lovely Stuff. (IB). Release Date: 30th August. Link: Official site: http://www.islandrecords.com/thekillers/site/home.las

CHARLOTTE HATHERLEY - SUMMER
The George Harrison (or Georgina if you will) of Ash follows up the catchy pop-punk of XTC-a-like excellence Kim Wilde with, you guessed it, a spritely summery slice of guitar heaven. Whilst the edge of Ash's new sound had shown promise, the pristine metal polish took the fun out of it and made it sound more Colour and The Shape than Girl From Mars. There's absolutely none of that here. No lavish production; you can hear the ring off the cymbal the way you should, the guitars are choppier than a North Sea wind, and delivers your old school punk in abundance. At times the catchy essence of Ash creeps in, at other times nihilistic Hatherley sounds like she wants to lead the headbanging hierarchy into wanton abandon like the good old days. Whilst Meltdown looked to turn Ash more into something corporate than Something Corporate, this is no-nonsense fun. Enjoy. (CA). Release Date: 2nd August. Link: Official Site: http://www.charlottehatherley.com/

JET - COLD HARD BITCH
I'm a fully paid up member of the Jet fan club these days, ever since catching them live, and this is another slice of pure pop rock heaven, which if you don't love suggests that you really have no taste in music, and shouldn't be allowed, well, out of your house infact, let alone to any gigs or festivals. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. (AF). I'll be honest, I absolutely hated Are you gonna be my girl. Ripping off Lust For Life and rammed down my throat by mobile phone ad and Radio 1, it was the spawn of a endlessly overplayed devil record. Rollover DJ fared slightly better; catchy, but you still thought they were a bit too Beatley/Wings copyists, especially when Look what you've done came along. As a ballad, it got tedious by the first chorus, and I must admit I could've see them as a poor toploader. Until this got me. Thankfully they've stuck more to their roots with the acca-dacca influences. This is Dirty Deeds done dirt cheap. It's Thunderstruck. You'd play this in your car on the way to the pub, and get out with a swagger. It's sleazy, it's straight up and down dirty. It's stuck in a rut without solos. it's brilliant. I can't stop smiling at how feel-good it is. It oozes muscle music from every orofice. I hope this is a change for them. More of this please. (CA). Release Date: 23rd August. Link: Fansite: http://www.alphalink.com.au/~slydaway/

GOLDIE LOOKING CHAIN - GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, RAPPERS DO
Comedy welsh rap that's being praised by the NME right now, despite the fact that it's only unintentionally funny. Apologies to any Welsh readers out there, but boy, you so can't rap. Sing, yes. Rap no. The accent just makes it laughable, but the lyrics about how they saw a documentary on BBC2 about how rappers are responsible for countless deaths will only raise a quizzical eyebrow upon hearing them, as you'll presume that this is only meant for drunken retards. And how many of them buy singles these days? (AF). Would that be chocolate wrappers then? I'm at a loss for how this sells, and how Radio 1 can stick this balderdash on primetime radio. It's tosh.  Not even remotely funny.  I'm not even sure they're all Welsh anyway. The
whiteboy rapper phenomenon has surely burst its bubble with this lot. Ali G at least was once funny at this form of parody. This ain't remotely near. (CA). Release Date: 16th August. Link: Official Site:

THE RASMUS - GUILTY
Over serious Goth music where every single song sounds the bloody same. I've nothing against Goths, honestly I haven't, but this kind of sound doesn't do them any favours, it's so dreary, so uninspired, so seen it all before. Why they're so popular is beyond me, surely there can't be that many miserable teenagers with bad taste in music out there can there? Oh dear. Obviously there must be. (AF). Release Date: August 9th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.therasmus.com/

RUSSELL CROWE FEAT. CHRYSSIE HYNDS - NEVER BE ALONE AGAIN
Heh. It's so easy to take the piss out of Crowe's musical career. But should I resist? Nah, where's the fun in that. For this is akin to watching your drunken Uncle do karaoke at a family shindig, where he thinks he's just bloody amazing, whilst everyone cringes and only manage weak smiles. We can only presume that Crowe must never listen to his own music, because surely if he did he'd realise how utterly embarrassing it is. But hey, it makes me laugh, so long may it continue. (AF). AVRIL LAVIGNE - HAPPY ENDING
In which our least favourite whiney American singer moans (just for a change) about her life. This time around she's whining about the end of a relationship. Presumably, going by her last single, because she refused to have sex with her ex. Come on lass, you're nineteen, you should be out drinking twenty bottles of alcopop's and vomitting in gutters, not complaining constantly about how poor your existance is. With all your millions and everything. Hmm. Now I find myself getting pissed off about it all. So infact, just fuck off yeah? (AF). So..Love is only a happy ending then..?  Oh come on, I'm not the only to pick out the similarities with the choruses. Sticking herself firmly in the power ballads territory, but with some crunchy chords that make her all
the more, well rock. The only people to rock out to this are 15 year old girls yet to sample Deep Purple and Middle aged moms that don't want to hear anything too loud, but don't mind something catchy. Me, I'll move swiftly on. (CA). Release Date: 2nd August. Link: Fansite:

THE THRILLS - WHATEVER HAPPENED TO COREY HAIM?
Didn't he appear in Sliders once? I know Feldman did, but Haim…I'm not so sure. The Divine Comedy/Belle and Sebastian/Brian Wilson strings are pretty great, but the lyrics seem to be inconsequential. It might as well have been, "What happened to Aztec chocolate bars", or "whatever happened to Ralph Macchio?" Not a patch on Don't Steal our Sun, or Big Sur. Only interesting as an instrumental. Sorry. (CA). Release Date: August 30th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.thethrills.com/

MACY GRAY - LOVE IS GONNA GET YA
Now I know she is the Marge Simpson of soul-funk, but I quite liked When I see you, it had the funk hooks I was missing while Prince was sorting himself out. This is bright, but more on a par with Joss Stone's Super-Duper Love. Used for the new Alicia Silverstone TV vehicle "Miss-Match". A bit too commercial radio, a bit too the bad side of Radio 2. Don't suppress that personality Macy, and write some better songs. (CA). Release Date: 16th August. Link: Official Site:
http://www.macygray.com

THE LIBERTINES - CAN'T STAND ME NOW
Am I the only one that doesn't get the Libertines? I hear all this praise for them, as one of the best bands to have come out of this country in a while. While I agree Don't look back into the sun was pretty catchy and enjoyable, and For Lovers was a nice enough track, that was attributed more to Wolfman than Doherty. Which leads me to this. Doherty is the more enjoyable lead singer of the Libertines, by a mile. He may not have the prettiest face, but he has personality, and his demons have been well documented. There's something so Artful Dodger/Spirit of Steve Marriott that I like. Carl Barat however, is ordinary. So it follows that this would be ordinary. He is clearly better groomed than Doherty, and fortunately for him lacks the demons, but for a edgy act such as this, it all sounds just too dull. I'm bored at the end of the first verse for chrissakes. I think I'll just go back to listening to Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, at least that gets you going. (CA). Release Date: 9th August. SOULWAX - ANY MINUTE NOW
It was a good 4 years ago when I first was impressed by Conversation Intercom, bought Much Against Everyone's Advice, loved it, got the special edition, saw them live, saw them rock out. Then incredibly impressed by the 2manyDJs stuff, which any afficionado knows are the perfect dance music remixes for long drives. 12" single NY Excuse worked more of a remix/sample-band ratio, but this is flat out guitars with whirring whammys. It's a bit Freakin' Out plugged into a Multi-FX pedal, and God bless 'em for trying to come across all arty, but really, you lose interest very quickly. It's not that its a bad record, I just would have liked something more distinctive. NY excuse was much better; much more going on. Hopefully that will be more representative of the album, and hopefully the only thing Any Minute now has in common with the album is it's the title track, and you can move on very, very, very quickly. (CA). Release Date: 9th August. Link: Official Site:

KEANE - BEDSHAPED
Hmm, I must admit I like the piano riffs of their stuff, and this is no exception. Very U2 power-ballady, and whilst it could wane after the 3rd week of being played on Radio 1/Commercial Radio this is the sort of introspective stuff set to be used for whatever replaces Dawson's Creek. Frankie Poulain may call this far worse than bed-wetting music, but it seems fine to me, if only for a late-night sulk. And it's not as if the Darkness and Keane are going for the same market. They must be careful, if they're around in 10 years time, they could be the next Marillion. Not bad, but after 4 weeks of hearing it on a 9 to 5 job, you may be wanting to slit their wrists, never mind your own. (CA). We got swept along with the wave of praise for Keane. Though admittedly their first single was something pretty special. It's just a shame they've followed it up with a bunch of Travis-lite tracks. This time there's a difference though, oh yes, for it's...um...oh dear...for it's U2-lite. Yep. Somehow, despite scientists claiming it's impossible, they've managed to become even blander than before. Ah well, if they carry on in this vein, they should be little more than a distant memory soon enough. (AF).Release Date: August 9th. Link: Official Site:

JULY 2004

THE CHARLATANS - TRY AGAIN TODAY
Yet another reinvention from the Northern also rans, where they chance their hand at sixties bland pop, a kind of insipid Beach Boys mixed with a by the numbers Beatles tune, though if this suggests it's even slightly interesting, then well, we've misled you. Horribly uninspired, I've had enough of Burgess and co, for the last decade all they've done is weakly copy other, greater, acts, and it's just not on anymore. (AF). Release Date: 26th July. Link: Fansite: http://folk.uio.no/eirikgu/Charlatans/

BUSTED - 3AM
In which Busted manage to conjure up a big, rather impressive if hardly original rock sound. And if you didn't listen to the lyrics you might even be convinced that this is actually pretty good. But of course it isn't. Because the lyrics are the usual trite nonsense - this isn't sixth form poetry even, more secondary school style attempts, and it's embarrassing really. It's time the boys were forced to recite their work without any musical background. Maybe the appalled look on the audience would then make them realise how terrible they are. You may think I'm too hard on Busted - but if they insist on pretending to be something they're not even close to being, then it's going to continue people. (AF). Release Date: July 26th. Link: Official Site:

RAMMSTEIN - MEIN TEIL
It was Lilya-4-ever that first got me hooked on the German Industrial Metallists. The use of Mein Herz Brennt as the intro was a masterstroke toward mood and the intensity of the situation, so much so that track has been classically altered to fit the new Merc ad. Ich will and its exquisitely brooding video, and uberballad Mutter were the highpoints of the previous album. 3 years later, they return with a more classical album. If the first single is any indication, they aren't going to kick out of old habits that quickly. Musically, it is less straight forward to appeal to industrial metallers only, the classical samples are in their courtesy of Flak, and interspersed between the crunching repetitive riffs that make industrial metal what it is, are synths straight off a later day Depeche Mode album. Lyrically it's as abrupt as ever – "Du bist. Was du isst" isn't that evocative, but that's the whole point. Dark and pensive, it's good to have Rammstein back for what could be one of metal's premier albums to be released this year. (CA). Release Date: 26th July.  Link: Official Site:
http://www.rammstein.com/

GRAHAM COXON - SPECTACULAR
As great as Happiness in Magazines has been, this is nothing short of unspectacular. In fact, it reminds me of a Blur album track - Jubilee, not bad, but not as brilliant as the preceding singles. Still, we can let him off one duff single in one of the albums of the year. (CA). A rocky-ish, occasionally lo-fi effort which sees Graham sound more like Damon than ever before. It's likeable, but not loveable, and there are plenty of better tracks on Happiness In Magazines. Still, we likes, but can't get inspired by it. (AF). Release Date: July 26th. Link: Fansite:
http://www.grahamcoxon.com/index.html

THE CURE - THE END OF THE WORLD
Robert Smith and co. return with a slice of guitar-pop that is more a return to return to their punkier roots than the shiny happy Goths they were around Love cats. The synths are in effect, and for me it's the best guitar pop renaissance since the Pretenders' Viva El Amor. Ross Robinson, notorious for producing edgy bands (Slipknot, ATDI) has fitted in nicely hear, and funnily enough, this does sound the best track they've produced in a long time. Almost on a par with Disintegration, but the rough and ready tuneless verse mirrors Pornography. As much as I liked the cartoony stuff of Love Cats, Lullaby, Close to Me, this is a really distinctive sound. The production is too the forefront, everything is clear, and really builds nicely. Nice work. (CA).  Release Date: 19th July. Link: Official Site:
http://www.thecure.com/

LOU REED - SATELLITE OF LOVE (DAB HANDS REMIX)
Oh the shame of it all. I'd like to compare this to the original, but, well, ah, I've not heard it. Tis poor I know, I really should have, especially considering the amount of time I have for Lou Reed. Or the 70's Lou Reed anyhow. Everyone I know who has heard the original hates it to pieces. But judged soley by it's own merits, well, It's dancey enough but quite trancey in a way, upbeat but mellow, and nice enough if hardly anything to get excited about. (AF). Release Date: 19th July. Link: Official Site:
http://www.loureed.org/

ANASTACIA - SICK AND TIRED
Anastacia describes this as Sprock - a combination of Soul, Pop and Rock. Yep, we're cringing too. I mean, come on. Sprock on! anyone? Sprock hard baby? Erm, anyway, it's sort of okay in a weak pop kind of way, but we've a very limited tolerance for multi-millionaire singers whining about their lives, and this crosses that line oh so quickly. And the various cliches found in the lyrics make it unforgivably tiresomee. (AF). Release Date: 19th July. Link: Fansite: http://www.anastaciafanclub.com/

SNOW PATROL - SPITTING GAMES
Ah, I wish I could feign surprise. But I'd always felt that Snow Patrol were only slightly above average, and Spitting Games proves this to be true. Sure their first breakthrough single was melodic and enjoyable enough if you like nodding along to music rather than dancing to it, but this is about as interesting as learning how to juggle. And equally as pointless. Singing about his shyness when approaching women, it just doesn't go anywhere, and I can't find even one slightly positive thing to say about it. (AF). Release Date: July 12th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.snowpatrol.net/

D12 - HOW COME
Yet more signs of Eminem's decline unfortunately, this is an incredibly over-earnest track, but surely of little interest to anyone bar his more Stan-like fans. Here he moans about lost connections with friends from his past, whilst a couple of the other guys from D12 reply that it's because of how he's changed post fame. It goes nowhere, and is strangely contradictive. Will make you miss the old days where he used to spout angrily about any old crap. Weak. (AF). Release Date: 19th July. Link: Fansite:
http://www.d12world.com/

RACHEL STEVENS - SOME GIRLS
Why do I hate pop like this? Because it epitomises what's wrong with the music industry today, where as long as the singer's blonde and has a reasonably sized chest, it doesn't matter in the slightest if it's any good. Wankpop as it were. Whilst countless talented bands struggle and fail to get a record contract or are dropped after one album. And this is piss poor nonsense at it's worst, vaguely tuneful, but only because engineers have clearly spent days if not months mixing it. Your time is up Ms Stevens. Do the decent thing and give it up, maybe turn up on some soap where I don't have to acknowledge that you exist anymore. (AF). Release Date: 12th July. Link: Fansite:
http://www.rachelstevens.nnoll.iwarp.com/

JENNIFER ELLISON - BYE BYE BOY
So you're in a top soap, you decide to leave to launch your music career, and when your first supposedly seductive single fails to set the world alight, you decide to go all rock chick on us? Ah, well, you can't blame the girl for trying. It's quite a transition too, she's uglied herself up for the video, at least some of the time, and does her best to sing with attitude. But don't worry Loaded fans, she still strips down to her bra in the vid. Sigh. So wankpop with an unconvincingly rocky edge? Alas so. (AF). Release Date: 5th July. Link: Fansite:
http://www.members.tripod.com/jenniferellison0/

YOUNG HEART ATTACKS - STARLITE
Yeah yeah, they're young with crazy hair and a penchant for sounding like they've not heard any other music other than 70's metal, but don't think for a second that it makes them any good. Starlite's the best tune they've yet made, and it's okay, but nothing more than that, and if you rush out and buy the album on the strength of this, you'll only find 10 or so despairingly similar tunes. (AF). Release Date: 5th July. Link: Official Site:
http://www.youngheartattack.net/

THE STREETS - DRY YOUR EYES
The hyperbole sounding Mike Skinner continues to astound me, as this has been described as the most touching song to be released this year.  How someone with all the rhythmic quality of an Essex wide-boy aping Brandon Block’s “Oy Oy!” patois can be described as touching is the most bewildering thing I have heard all year. He might as well have nicked Alexei Sayle’s act from “Hullo John got a new motor”. You want touching, listen to any Tom Waits, particularly Small Change. Waits depicts the back streets of New York and the gang culture. Skinner whines about some bird. Probably called Tracey. (CA). Release Date: July 19th. Link: Official Site: http://www.the-streets.co.uk/

THE HIVES - WALK IDIOT WALK
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.  The guitars are still choppy, simple and repetitive. Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist still howls, screeches and proclaims The Hives as the messiahs of punk rock. The matching clothes, the fifties coiffeurs, the ‘negative’ look; it’s all still there.  There’s just this nagging feeling amidst the euphoria of The Hives returning. The wave has already been ridden, but here they are riding it as close to shore as possible. It’s alright, but I really wish this old dog had done some new tricks after all. (CA). Release Date: 5th July. Link: Fansite: http://www.hives.2ya.com/

VELVET REVOLVER - SLITHER
The first single from Slash's supergroup is a winner, baby. Oh yeah. And we're not just saying that because we recently interviewed them (
click here to read it), no no. Because personally I wasn't expecting much from them, presuming it would be over hairy eighties rock time once again. But no, this is a more grungey, darker sound, with a lot more going on sonically in the background than the majority of metal. It's Soundgarden-y at times, but that's never, ever, been a bad thing, and overall it's all rather special. And more proof that nu-metal's not prepared to roll over and die yet in the slightest. (AF). Release Date: 5th July. Link: Official Site: http://www.velvetrevolver.com/

SHAZNAY LEWIS - NEVER FELT LIKE THIS BEFORE
The driving force behind All Saints offers up something set to push the ears of many a listener…back into a soft pillow, as they drift off to this uninteresting pile of nonsense that has MOR indelibly etched all over it. It begs the question were any of them talented or right place, right time, crest of a wave fashionable ladies that sang for the Bridget Jones generation. Sugarbabes have that mantle now, but you wished ‘ol Shaz had come up with something a bit more distinctive. (CA). Release Date: 5th July. Link:
http://www.shaznay.com

ASH - STARCROSSED
It's about time Ash got far more respect than they do. Whilst many have been celebrating Supergrass 10th birthday lately, even though rather disappointingly they've just released their worst ever single, Ash have been around for pretty much the same amount of time and yet rarely get described as little more than 'quite fun'. This, the second single from their new album, sees a slower, more ballady take on life, but with a huge sound that's as good as anything Travis or Coldplay have released lately, and more importantly, yet another indication of how they're just getting better and better right now. (AF). Release Date: July 12th. Link: Official Site: http://www.ash-official.com/

Comments?
AUGUST'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH:
EMBRACE - GRAVITY
“Honey it’s been a long time coming” sings Danny McNamara, such apt lyrics in this Embrace’s first single release for nigh on 2 years. Written by Chris Martin, Coldplay never got round to recording a version of this song, they only ever played it live. Chris in his infinite wisdom decided it would be much more suited to his mates Embrace and thus handed it over. Embrace have took Martin’s stark piano ballad and added and added until it’s about as warm as a night in by a log fire. Granted the opening piano is unmistakably Coldplay (The Scientist anyone?) but the rest is pure Embrace. Danny’s vocals, which in previous work had floundered and sounded as whiney as my cars brakes have never sounded better than here, soaring above brother Richards guitar work. In some ways it kind of harks back to the days of the big guitar/piano anthems of The Good Will Out but it’s much less obvious. The anthemic qualities are there but less in your face. The song builds to a crescendo with a perky twinkly guitar riff accompanying the heartfelt singing, Danny intoning “can you hear my heart beating”. Embrace are wearing their collective hearts on their sleeves in this song. The album “Out Of Nothing” – due in September is going to be one of the albums of the year if rumour is to be believed. People with stonier hearts than me have heard the promo and have been reduced to tears by all accounts. Given that I played Gravity ten times in a day and sobbed through each play such is its all or nothing beauty, I can only suspect the album will see me end up in a padded cell. (IB). Bloody Hell. I'd all but written off Embrace, despite once loving them so, but this is 4 minutes and 40 seconds of pure bliss. I can't stop listening to it time and time again, it's that special, and I could go on and on about it, but Izzy's already described perfectly why this is so beautiful and such an essential purchase. Btw, you can listen to it on the official site right now. So do so. (AF). The McNamaras have always done anthems well. As Izzy said - penned by Chris Martin, so it has that Come Back To What You Know/The Scientist hybrid feel about it. Certainly more sombre than a lot of their best anthems, which is why I think it's an odd choice for a comeback single really. Sorry to have to disagree with Izzy, but it's not as great as warranting ten plays in one day on my Car CD player, or my PC for that matter. It's quite touching, sure, but then You're Not Alone was touching in a more uplifting sort of way. It moved at a canter, while this seems to drag in the verses and come to life in the choruses, before building to the now required big finish. Another one of those to listen to after a bad day at the office, but keep sharp implements out of the car on the way home. (CA). Release date: August 30th. JULY'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH: BADLY DRAWN BOY - YEAR OF THE RAT
Silent Sigh is always going to be my favourite BDB moment, the way he sings on that track really pulled heartstrings. Of course I don't want every song to be similar, but it's a shame that he's never revisited that sound. Still, this is pretty damn fine all the same,  despite it's slightly hippish sentiments and that it sounds very similar to what you'd expect from him. The chorus, where a children's choir backs his vocal's, gives it a lot more power, and it's gently appealing. Not outstanding then, but still very likeable. (AF). Release Date: 19th July.
