JUNE 2004

MORRISSEY - FIRST OF THE GANG TO DIE
Aha, a step in the right direction.  Following his emo hungry political commentary about how bad it is to be English; it was alright, but lacked a tune, and over before it even started. Now Steven/Morrissey/Old Mozza (take your pick) has followed up with something resembling his last great song “The more you ignore me”. It’s not quite as lyrically brilliant, but at least we have him crooning a love song for the disaffected youth. (CA). Release Date: June 28th. Link: Official Site: http://www.morrisseymusic.com/

THE ALARM - NEW HOME, NEW LIFE
Everyone’s talked about their image stunt with Poppyfields 45 as a stroke of genius. This has been destroyed by several critics as white-cliffs of Dover windswept cock-rock. They have a point. I like melancholy songs as much as the cigarette lighter wielding stadium rock fanatics, but this is weak. Done by Backyard Babies, it would unfathomably cheesy, bordering on Hanoi Rocks and loved by retro rockers everywhere. This is tame by comparison, sounding like latter day Mansun (the middle of the road album - Little Kix). Appeal to Ballad loving Genesis fans, and as out of touch as Calling All Stations was. (CA). Release Date: 21st June. Link: Official Site:

RAZORLIGHT - GOLDEN TOUCH
Are you getting excited about Razorlight? Are you booking tickets to see them within seconds of them going on sale? Have you already scarred yourself for life with a Razorlight tattoo? You are? But why? Whilst there's nothing wrong with them, we've heard this all before. Too many times. It's likeable enough, in the same way you might be vaguely fond of a friend's hamster, and shows some promise, and who knows, if they decide to do something original soon, everything might turn out okay. But this hasn't happened yet.(AF). Release Date: June 14th. Link: Fansite:

N.E.R.D. - MAYBE
From the Latino influenced preceding single to this Pretzel Logic inspired take on Pharrell aping his mentor Prince.  Pharrell and Chad clearly are looking to emulate Becker and Fagen’s songwriting aristocracy. It’s just not, well, up to standard. Long ago they mentioned their Steely Dan influences, and I was just praying for them to appear. They have and it’s disappointing to say the least. Pharell’s Prince is starting to wear thin, especially as the original is doing it so much better, and is just seems, well lazy. Perfect for Radio 1 listeners, but everyone else should gloss over at best. Very average. (CA). Release Date: 14th June. Link: Official Site:
http://www.n-e-r-d.com/

BRITNEY SPEARS - EVERYTIME
In which Britney's latest trick is to go all Tori Amos on us. In that it's a slow, simple piano sound over pleading vocals. If only the lyrics were written by Ms. Amos though, as this is fine but all too obvious. You have to applaud her for at least trying something different, but this is never going to appeal to anyone bar the pre-teens and the FHM reading crowd. Though if you get off watching her bath set suicide scene, seek help immediately. (AF). Release Date: June 14th. Link: Fansite:
http://www.britneyspears.org/

OUTKAST - ROSES
Finally, after the overplay of average Hey Ya, and smooth, but ultimately dull The Way you move, comes the closest thing to a compromise from Andre and Big Boi.  Taken from Andre's "The Love Below" album, Andre's dichotomy of pining for an old girlfriend and crudely displaying frustration at his unwanted affection not being returned is put in such a fun level, you can't help but love it. It has all the elements of a funk track you wish Prince was still doing, and the beats and swagger of Classic Outkast. Big Boi's rap may not be the best from him, but this is the best single lifted off the double album. Guaranteed a hit of the summer. (CA). Release Date: June 21st. Link: Fansite: http://www.outkast-web.de/

THE GIRLS OF FHM - DO YA THINK I'M SEXY?
Where to start? Rod Stewart's one of my mortal enemies (no.6 of 17), his entire solo career has been one painful monstrosity to the next, and this song is his worst crime against music. And somehow, somehow the Girls of FHM have in their cover made an even worse mess of it. Shocking. (AF). Release Date: June 21st. Link: Official Site:
http://www.fhm.com/

KYLIE MINOGUE - CHOCOLATE
I wasn't too convinced by her 'Can't Get You Outta My Head' period, maybe I was still smarting over how she'd so quickly discarded her indie image, maybe it was that whilst it can't be denied that it was a great track, Kylie didn't exactly add much to it. But now she's moved in to being 'Sexy, Soulful and Seductive Kylie' I just can't get enough. Slow was a tune which in anyone else’s hands could have been a disaster, but she made it perfect, and this is more of the same, super confident and irresistible. And trust me, I never thought I'd be saying this. How things change, eh? (AF). Release Date: 28th June. Link: Fansite:
http://www.kylie.co.uk/

SCISSOR SISTERS - LAURA
Sorry, sorry, I know you came hear looking for some kind of opinion, but the jury's not just out on Scissor Sisters, they've gone home because they just can't be arsed anymore. In ten years time I'd bet millions that no one will even barely remember this band, fun though they might be from time to time. This is one of their quieter moments, refreshingly eighties-influence free, but I still can't say anything more about it other than "erm...well...I kinda sorta like it...". Sorry. (AF). Release Date: June 7th. Link: Official Site:

MAY 2004

THE DATSUNS - BLACKEN MY THUMB
I saw a documentary on Channel 4 previewing the Datsuns stuff and their lead guitarist was drilling out all these awesome solos, I thought it would be a coming of age album bringing 70's rock back to the forefront. So what happened? Decent Sub-Lizzy riff, but severely lacking a powerhouse of a solo, it gets tiresome very quickly. The sound undoubtedly is great, thanks in part to Led Zep bassist John Paul Jones at the helm, but it was all so promising.  Now I just seem deflated. (CA). Release Date: May 31st. Link: Official Site: http://www.thedatsuns.com/

FAITHLESS - MASS DESTRUCTION
Their biggest departure since Muhammed Ali, and the best Anti-war anthem released this year. Maxi Jazz focusing on the sort of themes brought up in Bowling for Columbine (Fear, Inaction, Hate) and Sister Bliss and Rollo keep it ticking over with all the energy expected from a Faithless track. How Dido manages to outsell her brother I will never know. (CA). Release Date: May 31st. Link: Fansite:
http://www.faithless.civ.pl/

PJ HARVEY - THE LETTER
Not the same catchy hooks of her previous album, this sounds like it could have appeared on Josh Homme's Desert Sessions, but fortunately for us, she strips away the infectiousness of Songs like "Big Exit" and "This is Love" and descends into dark brooding territory previously occupied by Patti Smith. Taken from Uh huh her, this could be a sleeper hit. (CA). Release Date: May 17th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.pjharvey.net/

PETER ANDRE - INSANIA
Ahh, it's almost as bad as you knew it'd be all those months ago when he was in the Jungle. But oddly more soulful, in a tackily bland way of course, and ignorable then you might have first thought. Interesting in a 'So this is what happens when incredibly stupid people try to philosophize' kind of way. But no other. (AF). Release Date: May 31st. Link: Fansite:
http://www.peter-andre.net/

SUPERGRASS - KISS OF LIFE
Oh lordy, the real King Monkey has tried to go all sexy and soulful on us. There's even a hint of funk here too. I mean...But I...Damnit, I'm almost lost for words. Did know one tell Gaz that white English men can't do this thing at school? It's a monstrosity, almost unlistenable too, and what frustrates the most is that I can't believe I'm writing this. Supergrass have for ten years been a band I've loved, and now they go and do this? Christ. This better be a one off experimental joke single type thang for them. Otherwise they'll be trouble. (AF). Funky departure for the upstarts who've been with us for a decade. Not coming anywhere near as good as anything on Life on Other Planets, it is fine in itself, but you hope Messrs Coombes, Goffey, and Quinn put out more quality stuff following this direction for the new album, otherwise their career might need the kiss of life. (CA). Release Date: 24th May. Link: Fansite:
http://www.strangeones.com/

JET - ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL?
I didn't have much time for these Aussie rockers at first, but catching them live changed that completely, almost in an instant too (
Click here for the review). That's where they really become alive, and whilst on record they still sound pretty fine, it's just not quite the same. It's still ridiculously catchy though, and a great summer song. (AF).  Release Date: May 24th. Link: Fansite: http://www.alphalink.com.au/~slydaway/

MUSE - SING FOR ABSOLUTION
More high pitched angst from Matt Bellamy and, er, whoever the rest of Muse are. Just so you know, this is one of the quieter, less histrionic numbers from them, and lovely to listen too, but ultimately it all sounds very very familiar. Ah, if only they could move on from their rock opera-esque stage and do something more subtle, more romantic, maybe then they'd arouse interest again. But they haven't this time around sadly. (AF). Release Date: 17th May. Link: Fansite:
http://www.microcuts.net/

MORRISSEY - IRISH BLOOD, ENGLISH HEART
So, after years in the wilderness, quietly releasing the odd album or so without even a hint of public interest, Morrissey's back and suddenly everyone cares. Which is odd due to this not being exactly the best of his solo work. The problem is the simplicity here, sure, you can't argue about the sentiment where Morrissey dreams of a time where it's not embarrassing to be English, and that it's not considered racism when you simply just love your country, but from a songwriter as talented as he is, more depth was without doubt expected. Hopefully the rest of the new album will satisfy more. (AF). Release Date: 10th May. Link: Fansite:
http://www.morrissey-solo.com/

THE CHARLATANS - UP AT THE LAKE
Now this is Manchester band that should have been Blur's rivals in the PR battles. Granted, records by Oasis and these have had a tendency of sounding similar, but with the Charlatans, they at least made the effort to try new sounds. In fact, there are more positives for the Charlatans than you'd think. Albums Telling Stories, Us and Us only, and finally West coast country rock Wonderland all had singles that were memorable songs for the time, but nothing to really come close to 'the only one I Know'. Until now. Whilst North Country Boy, and My Beautiful Friend obliterate anything the Gallaghers and co. have done post Don't look Back in Anger, it is the clumping sound of Up at the lake that mesmerises your foot into tapping joyously along, Where the pristine production of Wonderland once was, the resurgent edge on this track suggest Dr. Feelgood albums weren't far from the studio. Easily their best single in years, but you fear some bands are not destined to receive the attention that a worldwide phenomenon commands. With this single, there's always hope. (CA). Release Date: May 3rd. Link: Official Site:
http://www.thecharlatans.net/

KAISER CHIEFS - OH MY GOD
According to thisisfakediy.com these are the 'truly great band of the new millennium' and on this evidence there may be some merit in that statement. The nutty tendencies of Captain Beefheart/Frank Zappa are in full effect here, and the chorus of "oh my god I can't believe it I never been this far away from home" will have you yelling in congregations in indie-discos for the next two months minimum. As infectious and celebratory as it can get. Whilst Leeds United FC look to relegation, this Leeds outfit look set for a rise in popularity over the coming months. (CA).  Release Date: May 17th. Link: Official Site: http://www.kaiserchiefs.co.uk/

BLOC PARTY - BANQUET

I always look forward to a bit of Ska. From the Specials, The Beat to the more mainstream sounds of Madness and No doubt. So it comes as no surprise that someone would mesh the ska sounding drum beats with indie music's er, simple crunching chords. It begins as a sort of hybrid of the Specials "Lunatics are taking over the asylum" and the choppy guitars of old school punks. The Beat meets the Hives if you will. Lyrically its forgettable, but the reportedly 'hardest working band in the UK' at present counteract that with an interesting take on guitar music. (CA). Release Date: May 3rd. Link: Official Site:
http://www.blocparty.com/

V - BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS
Oh the lack of imagination shown here. Once when you launched a new pop act there had to be something vaguely different about them, at least in a 'Ooh, there's a black fella in the group' or 'Blimey that brunette lass can actually sing' kind of way, but now it seems that all you need is five young blokes who look vaguely attractive and can dance. A bit. And so to V, or Take That Vs.9.2 as they should be referred to from now on in. And even for pop it's so hideously bland and repetitive and so painfully unoriginal I can't imagine even the ickle kids who buy this kind of shite spending there pocket money on it. So hopefully it's the beginning of the end for them already. (AF). Release Date: 24th.

BUSTED - AIR HOSTESS
Did you see the way Jonathon Ross fawned over Busted on his chat show recently? Man it was his lowest moment yet, and he's had far too many already. Sure, he took the piss a bit, but you could see him desperately trying to appear hip and cool infront of them. He's finally finished the transition from a 'relatively cool guy' (back in the eighties he was, trust me) to 'being like your friend's Dad who thinks he's funny but's infact utterly embarrassing'. And it shows just how out of touch the BBC are by the way they're throwing money at him to appear on everything and anything at the moment. Jesus. Er, anyway, rant over (for now). And the latest single from Busted? Well you know I hate them. That it's shite. So there's no need to say anything else. (AF). I hold so much contempt for Jonathan Ross after he wouldn't play Emmylou Harris, or Queen, instead playing stereophonics, and tells us he's educating us? The poor deluded fool has as Alex said become an embarrassment and endorsing this nonsense is a prime example. As annoyingly catchy, and 'fun' as "Crash the Wedding" was (pride swallowed); this is boring. Most 6 to 10 year olds will end up listening to the Strokes or Green Day albums by the time their 15 anyway. Hopefully. (CA). Release Date: May 24th. Link: Fansite:
http://www.busted-rock.com/

411 (FEAT. GHOSTFACE KILLAH) - ON MY KNEES
A new US girl band, but strangely better than most, the difference here being that they're actually pretty damn pleasant to listen too, with a mix of stylishly different vocals over string drenched samples (think of a hybrid of Portishead and Bran Van 3000 and you'll get the idea), with only the rather obvious girl power sentiment disappointing a little. It's not something I'd ever buy, but if my other half insists on torturing me with mtv (which unfortunately she does) I'd rather hear this than anything else. (AF). Release Date: May 17th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.the411.co.uk/

ALANIS MORRISETTE - EVERYTHING
I'd been all ready to rip this apart in the first few seconds of hearing it, but then suddenly it shocked, introducing a mix of violent guitars, psychedelic keyboards whilst almost every other word Alanis sings is of the disturbingly disgusting variety. Sorry? You don't believe me? Well, you've got good reason not too, how I wish the above was even vaguely truthful, but it was all lies. Of course it's the same old whiney bollocks from Alanis. As per usual. Sigh. (AF). Shock horror, image change! She cut the famous locks, but as previously mentioned, nothing new about the music. Hell, the girls that loved 'Jagged Little Pill' are getting married, in steady jobs with high responsibility, why do they need her to vent about men anymore? (CA). Release Date: May 10th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.alanis.com/main.html

AVRIL LAVIGNE - DON'T TELL ME
And cor blimey guv, if it's not Ms.Morrisette jnr. And just like Alanis, Avril too is incredibly bloody irritating. Warbling on about how her boyfriend shouldn't try to guilt trip her in to bed, surely she just be thanking her lucky stars that anyone's even vaguely interested in shagging her in the first place. I mean have you ever looked closely at her plainer than a big old plain face? Sorry. A non-pc moment there. Back to the song - the chorus goes ''Dont Try To Tell Me What To Do, Don't Try To Tell Me What To Say, You're Better Off That Way-ayay-ayay-ayay.'' So there's no point in suggesting she commit suicide then? Awww, no fair. (AF). The PR execs need to actually listen to goth music, before they label something. Apparently dear Avril has come back with the darker, more gothic side, presumably 'cause her boyfriend wanted to make love, and she just wanted to crash the mall (again).  Sticking some overdrive on a ballad does not make gothic music. When the Cure released songs like "Friday I'm in Love" and "Love Cats" the soppy pop had more gothic attitude about it than this. Dear Siouxsie Sioux can rest easy. Metal postcard this ain't. (CA). Release Date: May 10th. Link: Fansite:
http://www.avrilfans.com/

KASABIAN – CLUB FOOT
Mmmm, I likes! A hybrid of the Stone Roses / Happy Mondays / Primal Scream sound throughout the nineties, this has a deliciously seedy vibe to it, and a sense that they really don't give a fuck whatever anyone thinks of their sound as long as they like it. Destined for great things if they carry on in this ilk methinks. Oh yes. (AF). I was 17 when I first heard "Wish you were here" and thought 'what a great album', and proceeded to listen to an array of prog music. I mention this 'cause it reminds me of these guys. Judging from interviews done, Kasabian seem like nice lads with good taste in music ranging from Floyd to Jazz and music with more beat to it. Good influences. Good Video. Problem is the style worries me that the hype will not be matched by the song, and let's face it, it didn't have the weight behind of a Rage against the Machine. Cinematic and atmospheric, yes. Profound. Not just yet. (CA). Release Date: May 10th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.kasabian.co.uk/

KEANE - EVERYBODY'S CHANGING
We've still high hopes for Keane, don't get me wrong, but this isn't what I'd hoped they'd follow up there last, truly superb, single with. Imagine if U2 and Embrace were accidentally merged together in a The Fly style transporter accident - this is how the resulting many limbed monstrosity would sound. And yes, that's not a good direction for them. Over earnest, painfully twee six form poetry style lyrics disappoint too. Come on guys, everyone knows you're capable of much better music than this. So get too it. (AF). In danger of becoming as bland as Coldplay, which reminds me; Of the four singles released off that album, "Clocks" get the most bloody attention?? I despair with the masses sometimes, really I do. Just the Coronation Street loving, Oasis worshipping simpletons, mind. The rest of you are alright. Anyway, this is the anthem equivalent of a quick-drying woodstain. It does exactly what it sets out to do the moment the chiming piano chords strike. Lead singer's vocals are more choirboy than Thom Yorke or Jeff Buckley, and this suits Radio 1's unimaginative playlist adequately enough. Feint praise maybe, but I think Keane are happy writing ethereal anthem music for the moment. (CA). Release Date: May 3rd. Link: Official Site:
http://www.keanemusic.com/

ASH - ORPHEUS
A surprisingly harsher sound from Ash, Orpheus will never be my favourite song of theirs (that still has to be Girl From Mars), but it's infectious and hey, at least they're trying something new-ish, so I shan't complain too much. It's a perfect start to the summer too, with it's lyrics about needing sunshine and hitting the open road. So another minor hit for the band? Yeah, yeah, I think so. (AF). More of a compromise to their old sound than 'Clones' was, but in the absence of more meaningful rock, I'm sure it will do for the summer. Would have liked to have heard a bit more growling. (CA). Release Date: May 3rd. Link: Fansite:
http://walking-barefoot.com/

GUNTHER & THE SUNSHINE GIRLS - DING DONG SONG
This has to be a piss-take. I mean it has to be. It just can't not be. It isn't? Oh lordy. And why the disbelief? Because it's europop of the worst kind, but also because it's unquestionably the funniest song released this year, as a European fella, complete with porn star moustache, sings about girls touching his 'ding ding dong' and his 'tra la la'. You'll be sick of it by the fifth time you hear it, but who cares when it's so childishly funny the first time round. (AF). Release Date: May 3rd. Link: Official Site:
http://www.gunthernet.com/

LOST PROPHETS - WAKE UP (MAKE A MOVE)
Shiny shiny nu-metal from this welsh group, who, like so much around at the moment, are well produced and technically fine, but lacking desperately in something. But I can't quite put my finger on what. Falls in to the 'if you like them, you'll like this, if you don't, this so won't change your mind' category. Ah, for the days of Symposium. Those guys knew how to rock. These don't, not really. Sigh. (AF). Release Date: May 3rd. Link: Official Site:
http://www.lostprophets.co.uk/

NATASHA BEDINGFIELD - SINGLE
Single you say? Ah, that must be because of everyone knows that Daniel Bedingfield's your brother m'dear. Jeez, giving in to the obvious sure makes writing these singles reviews a lot easier, but I'll stop now, I promise. So this is her first release, all about the joys of being single, and erm, well, her voice is...hmmm...pleasant's too strong a word. Barable? Yep, that's about it. And lyrically it's...hmmm...barable seems too strong a word now. Irksome? Irritating? Embarrassing? A mix of all three? Alas so. (AF). Release Date: May 3rd. Link: Official Site:
http://www.natashabedingfield.com/

JUNE'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH: BELLE & SEBASTIAN - BOOKS
How can the Novello judges go with Leave Right Now ahead of Step into my Office Baby? As great as that track was, why didn't I'm a cuckoo get nominated? Better still, why didn't this?  Wonderful harmonies, great chord changes, just intoxicating melodies, and every award ceremony seems to overlook them as a form of retribution for their genius usurping of the god-awful Steps for Best Newcomer. Truly Brilliant single, from a Truly Brilliant Album. Release Date: 21st June. Link: Official Site: http://www.belleandsebastian.com/

MAY'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH: GRAHAM COXON - BITTERSWEET BUNDLE OF MISERY
Bloody hell - it's Britpop! Yay! And the 'wry, chilled and fun' kind of Britpop which I personally will never tire off. It even sounds like early Blur, if Damon had been a bit more relaxed and less pretenious. A pretty radical change from Graham's usual lo-fi efforts, this is easily the best song he's yet released, and'll deserve to sell more than it probably will. It's subtly romantic too, if in a doomed way, and with lines like: ''I can never hope to set you free, because you're my bittersweet bundle of misery'' how can you fail to not fall in love with it? (AF). Not as much of a departure as Freakin' out. I would agree that it's by no means a carbon copy of "Coffee and TV", rather a fusion of early Blur as Alex rightly said, and Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros influences. It's certainly less full on than Freakin' out, but no less appealing. The man with the Midas touch in alternative rock continues to spread his wealth around. (CA). Release Date: May 3rd.
