OCTOBER 2003

BRITISH SEA POWER – REMEMBER ME
Bloody hell, I mean there’s being influenced by and then just plain sounding like. And British Sea Power’s Remember Me falls firmly in to the latter category, sounding more like David Bowie than Bowie himself does these days. But hey, those cheeky boys just about get away with it as this is a foot stompingly fun slice of glam rock, and yeah, whilst it’s a re-release and not actually new material from this rather lovely band, it’s still worth seeking out. (AF). Release Date: October 20th. Link: Official Site:

THE STROKES – 12:51
I know, I know, this came out weeks ago and had a healthy chart placing, but I was flued up, and my radio out of batteries. Ahem. Enough with the excuses though and on to the review. And well upon first hearing it was so a ‘what the fuck’ reaction, with Julian’s vocals drowned out by some pleasant but hardly revolutionary keyboards. But after catching it a few more times it’s grown on me more and more, and tis really rather catchy. It shows the band aren’t afraid to play around with there established sound, and the lyrics are drolly clever as per always. No classic perhaps, but an extremely promising sign that the band aren’t a one album wonder. (AF). Release Date: October 6th. Link: Fansite:

PHIXX – HOLD ON ME
Another bunch of reality TV rejects are about to assault our ears. Yes, Phixx (what a great name) are the five rejects who didn’t make it into doomed ‘vocal harmony group’ One True Voice.  Lee from Blue says ‘they will be massive’, and they have been writing tracks with Bryan McFadden of Westlife. Add to this the fact that no less than two of their members look like Robbie from Eastenders and they’re bound to go far.  The song is tedious camped-up eighties clap-trap, and most certainly not in a good way. Is there really a gap in the market for more of this nonsense? I sincerely hope not. (KS). Release Date: 27th October. Link: Official Website:  http://www.phixx.info/

ELBOW – FUGATIVE MOTEL
Every so often I put on Elbow’s Powder Blue just to remind myself that they were once able to make a beautiful and unique sound. Alas they’re a one song wonder in my book, able to chuck out admittedly nice enough tunes, but never able to reach the high that they once did. And each and every time a new single comes out I have great hopes, only for them to be dashed yet again. And so yes, this is fine enough. But not that great. Far too similar sounding, and lyrically self-indulgent. And my hopes for them are gradually dying. A true shame. (AF). Release Date: 27th October. Link: Official Site:

KYM MARSH - SENTIMENTAL

Friend’s often say, Alex, why do you hate Miss Marsh so much? Isn’t she just identical to the countless other pop puppets out there? Does she really deserve the bile you pour upon her every time she releases a new record? Is it because you’re secretly jealous that she married Jack Ryder and you didn’t? But ah, it’s easy to reply to them. It’s because of the attitude you see. Whilst most other manufactured acts amble along quietly, I constantly see her mouthing off about how important her music is, how special and truly original it sounds when of course it’s blander than bland. Blander than Will Young even. Though for the Jack Ryder thing, erm, no, and please stop that. Anyhow. This is crap. But for once I won’t tell you how crap it is. You’ve caught me in a kind mood you see. (AF). Release Date: 27th October. Link: Official Site:

AQUALUNG – BRIGHTER THAN SUNSHINE
Hey, guess what? This sounds like Strange and Beautiful. But without being as catchy. Or interesting. Hmmm…I remember saying exactly the same thing when reviewing their last single too. Poor eh? (AF). Release Date: 13th October. Link: Official Site:
http://www.aqualung.net/

KINGS OF LEON – WASTED TIME
Everyone I know is raving about these guys, so well, I’m prepared to admit that maybe I’ve got it 100% wrong, but they’re just not my cup of tea. Or coffee. Or even still water. There’s something so dry about them, they might be bluesy but when I listen to them I don’t feel anything, anything in the slightest. Molly’s Chamber was at least one of those songs that could on occasion get stuck annoyingly in your head. This is just instantly forgettable. Release Date: October 20th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.kingsofleon.com/

ELECTRIC SIX – DANCE COMMANDER
Ah, this one trick pony have finally run out of catchy songs it seems. And only thee tunes in too. Hmmm. This is still vaguely fun, but it just doesn’t have the immediacy of Danger High Voltage or Gay Bar, it’s tongue isn’t planted quite so firmly in it’s cheek, and so it’s a lot less fun. Still, you know, as novelty indie pop goes its fine. Just not that fine. (AF). Release Date: October 13th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.electricsix.com/electricsix.html

KOSHEEN – WASTING MY TIME
If a rule book on how to write really drab trancey pop tunes was ever written, the number one rule surely would be ‘don’t give the song a title that critic’s can incorporate in to a damning review’. But there isn’t. And Kosheen have fallen in to this trap, as it’s not just my time they’re wasting, but everyone’s. Lazy journalism it might be, but it really doesn’t deserve anything better considering how insipid drippy pathetic and abysmally mundane this song is. (AF). Release Date: October 13th. Link: Fansite:
http://www.kosheen.net/

CRAIG DAVID – WORD FILLED WITH LOVE
An odd mix of whining of the perils of fame, with a side order of ‘bloody hell I’m great aren’t I’ self praise. Fuck me I hate the fella even more than I used too, and no, I didn’t think that was possible either. Er, I really should make this review a bit longer though shouldn’t I? No? You’ve got the idea that I despise the man completely? Ah, good. (AF). Release Date: 13th October. Link: Fansite:
http://www.geocities.com/craigdavidfans/

FAST FOOD ROCKERS – SAY CHEESE (SMILE PLEASE)

This is the cheeky girls fault you know. They’ve made it vaguely acceptable again for music for the under fives like this to be released, and now expect to see much more simplistic tosh akin to this being bombarded upon the nation’s airwaves. The advent of kids pop channels on Sky doesn’t bode well either. Ah. I should stop getting so wound up about it all, I mean at least the album charts are full of credible acts, but I’d like to listen to the top 40 countdown just once in a while without having the urge to sharpen a kitchen knife and head down to various record labels across the country. It’s not likely though, is it? (AF). Release Date: October 6th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.fastfoodrockers.co.uk/

R.E.M - BAD DAY
Something slightly different, whilst being incredibly similar at exactly the same time.  No, I haven't just contradicted myself, I've just described the new single of the "Best of R.E.M", and whilst it isn't going to fall into any comparisons with inventive works like "Monster" and "New Adventures in Hi-Fi", it does have subtle intricacies which make it stand out from the singles released off the last album at the very least, and is certainly catchy enough to warrant plenty of listens.  Could it have been so much more? Probably. My advice, just be content with the excellent video, and move on. No, wait a second.  Don't move on, as it is actually really jovial, and the tongue in cheek video is great, and it's also great that critics are seething about the fact that two 'supposedly' new tracks are being added to the greatest hits, when actually this one was demoed during the "Life's rich pageant" album session, some lyrics have been added, it's been polished up, but technically it's not 'new'. Crafty devils. (CA). Release Date: October 13th. Link: Fansite:

SUEDE – ATTITUDE

Another one of these marmite bands. You either love them to bits, or are too embedded in rock you can not stand the bowie-esque mimmickry of Brett Anderson.  Thankfully, I tend to meander to the former, although I concede the last consistently great album from them was "Coming Up", and Oakes is not as complex an arranger of guitar riffs as Butler was, but he penned along with Anderson the three most infectious tracks they have; the incendiary "Trash", the infectious "Beautiful ones", and the hold the cigarette lighter aloft "Saturday Night".  Subsequent albums have been comfortable at times, shown flashes of quality at others, but have been largely lacklustre. The singles released off "Head Music" with the exception of "Everything will Flow" anchored themselves in uninteresting teritory, whilst on "A New Morning", "Positivity" was probably a little to polished to take, "Obsessions" had the potential to be a crowd pleaser, but it was all ultimately a tad too safe.  But, for the Best of, they have chosen to come back with an electoclash blend of pretension and dare I say it 'attitude'. It certainly is inventive, not something you would have expected from them in the past few years, and will intrigue as much as it will annoy those who prefer the safe stuff. Me, I welcome the change. SEPTEMBER 2003

JOE STRUMMER AND THE MESCALEROS – COMA GIRL
A bit belated, as I believe this has already been released as a single, but given there's a lot of terrible stuff being passed off as punk, I thought I'd mention this as a point to young upstarts wishing to emulate one of the pioneers of punk; the late Joe Strummer.  This track has more vibrancy than anything the US and UK corporate punk scene has offered this year, and is a great way for Strummer to bow out.  Frenetic, fantastic, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Buy whatever copies are left, or if sold out, order one. (CA). Release Date: September 22nd.  Link:

THE DARKNESS – I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE
It’s as if someone took the technical elements of Queen, the crunching 'muscle-music' and catchy simplicity of ACDC, added a gimmick or two, stuck the whole caboodle into a blender, whisked it into a frenzy, and cried "this'll work" upon the end result.  Luckily for them, it does. Lets face it, besides Muse, the Darkness are the only UK rock act to release an album this year that offers something interesting to listen to, as opposed to the jangly coldplay like guitars, or the nu-punk wave started by corporate sounding US bands. This single should continue the phenomenon of the Darkness, but you just have to wonder where they go from here? Justin getting his hair cut short, growing a tache and moving from the all in one pieces to a pair of trousers and half a mic-stand? Dan going for a more poodley hair cut? A switch
to the more synth based stadium pop-rock, or a desire to churn out the same style of music for the next 25 years whilst keeping their gimmick intact? Hell, if both those scenarios can work for Queen and ACDC respectively, The Darkness should have no problems following their mentors successfully. (CA). I’ve been thinking about the old Britpop days lately, and wondered why alternative music hasn’t managed to take a stranglehold on the charts since. And I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s because everything became too earnest, too muso, everyones just taking themselves far too seriously, and lack the wit and humour of some of the best bands (Pulp, Blur, Suede, David Devant and His Spirit Wife, even Oasis) of the time. Not that I want all my music to be comedy-tastic, but well, the odd tongue in cheek track never goes amiss. And that’s why The Darkness are going to succeed so well if they carry on in this vein. Because ‘I Believe In a Thing Called Love’ is utterly ridiculous, but gloriously so. It doesn’t even attempt to take itself seriously, and is full of OTT guitar solo’s and tongue in cheek lyrics. And I love it. It’s been stuck in my head for weeks now, and I just can’t get enough of it. And I just hope they manage to carry on in this vein. (AF). Release Date: 22nd September. (Delayed from 25th August). Link: Official Site:

TRAVIS – RE-OFFENDER

Those expecting a radical departure will have to wait a tad longer.  It is mellow and nice enough to be ranked alongside the Cardigans last album, but if you were hoping for an Angst-ridden "All I wanna do is Rock" return from Fran, Dougie, Neil and Andy, you'd better hope "Peace the Fuck Out" has more aggression in it than just the title alone.  Taken from "12 Memories". (CA). Ah, I’m with Craig on this one, whilst the rest of the world is getting all angry and rawk-tastic, Travis have gone down the dull ballad route but have made the mistake in failing to make it even remotely catchy. It even sounds a bit Radiohead-y at times, but a Radiohead who decided to write songs about shite subjects. Shockingly poor. And don’t even get me started on Fran’s new haircut. (AF). Release Date: 29th September. Link: Fansite:
http://www.he-ey.org/

HOPE OF THE STATES – ENEMIES / FRIENDS
Rather relaxed indie which reminds of perhaps too many bands, the most obvious being Idlewild on a rain soaked day, for my liking, but I’m drawn to them because of the obvious passion they have, and well, who can resist a band which has a bald violinist in it? You can? But why? (AF). Release Date: 29th September. Link: Official Site:
http://www.hopeofthestates.co.uk/

BLONDIE – GOOD BOYS

Initially this felt like a below-par track for Blondie, despite their leanings for rekindling avant garde styles of 'Rapture' it was just too polished, presumably though Pro Tools, as is the basis for most bands today. However, on further listens it is certainly catchy enough, and in the current climate is marginally better than most pop records out there. It is an OK track by Blondie standards, but 'Maria' had more to it, before it was ultimately played to death.  The only real shock factor is Debbie Harry is a brunette in the video - so Blondie by name only then. (CA). Release Date: 22nd September. Link: Fansite:
http://www.geocities.com/theblondiereview/TheBlondieReview.html

ELVIS PRESLEY – RUBBERNECKIN

Presumably hoping to cash in on the success of A Little less conversation, this is a supposedly lost Elvis track from his fifties floppy hair period, remixed and revamped in an attempt to make it feel modern. But it lacks bite, attitude and flair, and is a by the numbers remix by Paul Oakenfield which really cries out to be played around with, but clearly little efforts been put in here. Whilst bearable background music, it’s never going to be anyone’s favourite song by him. (AF). Release Date: 22nd September. Link:
http://www.elvis.com/default.asp

YEAH YEAH YEAHS – MAPS
I'm undecided about this.  The guitars start brightly enough with the tremolo-picking and the jazz drumming, and Karen O's vocals are incredibly touching. Sadly the overdubbed standard guitar riff for the band hits as we reach the verse, and the lyrics just don't seem to have a point. Does anyone really write lyrics with a means to an end, or are they just taking the easy option and repeating words to fit a rythmn? Anyway, it makes you ponder certainly, but doesn't engulf you with melancholy, which is what all the best sad songs do. As an aside, the drummer has a canny resemblance to Jewish Comedian and actor Richard Belzer. Just thought I'd point that out. Release Date: 22nd September. Link: Fansite:

ALIEN ANT FARM – THESE DAYS

You have to wonder how a crash affects a band's perspective? In this case, it presumably has lightened an intensely angry but ultimately unimportant band.  That's not to say this isn't fun.  It is. Well, it is on first listen, probably by third or fourth listen, you'll be thinking they've been inspired by their bosses Papa Roach moving into no-brainer rock with power chords galore and bog standard lyrics which don't mean a goddamn thing, so to speak. Palatable, but that's about it. (CA). Release Date: September 15th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.alienantfarm.com/

THE CORAL – SECRET KISS
If 'Pass it On' was akin to 'Dreaming of You' with splices of James Taylor interwoven, then surely this is nailing the dreamy sounds of the sixties merseybeat.  It certainly isn't as nutty as a lot of the first album, more 'Shadows Fall' than 'Skeleton Key', but James Skelly's vocal has so much soul to it, the harmonies are exquisite and allow you to float along to this wonderful lament.  Worth listening to, while we wait for the experimentation and epic masterpieces to appear, and get us rousing instead of relaxing. (CA). Release Date: September 29th. Link: Official Site: http://www.thecoral.co.uk/

FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE – STACEY’S MOM

Memo to Pop Idol Judges: this is how pop music SHOULD sound. Chris Collingwood sings about being fixated on a friend's mom, and replacing the departed husband in the band's usual throwaway manner; "Stacey's mom has got it going on", ryhming 'school' and 'pool' and 'trip' and 'slip' among others.  Normally I wouldn't advocate encouraging crushes like this, but it is harmless after all. It's just catchy as hell, a pile of fun, has the trademark key change for the last verse, and this is up there with "I want an alien for christmas". Fountains of Wayne can put themselves in the same league as Grandaddy and Hot Hot Heat. Good company to be in. (CA). Release Date: 15th September. Link: Official Site:
http://www.fountainsofwayne.com/home/

METALLICA - FRANTIC

Just when nu-metal was developing a little, when it was becoming a tad unpredictable, well, at least at times, Metallica come along as if the last decade hasn't happened at all, and this is RAWK at it's most mundane, lots of angry shouting and little content. Sigh. You'd expect more from a band that once was so good. But they haven't delivered this time around at least. (AF). Release Date: 8th September. Link: Fansite:
http://www.encycmet.com/

THE WHITE STRIPES -  I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF
Beautifully done cover of the semi-classic Burt Bacharach song which starts off subtly gentle before building and building to a screamingly enjoyable climax. Jack and Meg sure know how to cover a song properly too, this is no rehash of the original tune, and all the better for it. So go bye. (AF). Release Date: 1st September. Fansite:

ELTON JOHN – ARE YOU READY FOR LOVE?
Elton, Elton, Elton. Come on now fella. You’ve more money than most third world countries, you were even vaguely enjoyable in the seventies, at least compared to most, but this remix of a supposedly lost track (though I could swear I’ve hear it before many a time) is just beyond poor, lacking any spirit and bite. So stop now? Please? Because this is worse than the kind of music you used to hear in McDonald’s before they realised that their choice of tunes was driving customers close to suicide. Yes. That bad. (AF). Release Date: 1st September. Link: Official Site: http://www.eltonjohn.com/flash_index.asp

THE MARS VOLTA – INERTIATIC ESP
Honorable mention time: I'm not entirely sure that this will be released as a single, but the wonderfully cut video (a fitting tribute to bandmember Jeremy Michael Ward) is worth mentioning to all to check out on digital music TV when you get the chance - MTV2 or Kerrang or Scuzz are most likely to air. This single, taken from the album "De-loused in the Crematorium" puts The Mars Volta as one of the most inspiring US Rock acts to appear since, ironically enough, the demise of At the Drive-In.The split of ATDI left us with two bands of differing style; Whilst Sparta seems to be favouring the progressive epic detuned metal which does actually seem like dirge, The Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez conjures up experimental riff after riff, and Cedric Bixler's voice is more passionate and melancholic in its intensity than Colin from Hundred Reasons has got at the moment. Sure, they may have stole most of their style of playing from Fugazi, but one thing that can not be denied is The Mars Volta are one of the most captivating bands around, and this is prime brilliance. (CA). Release Date: 22nd September. Link: Official Site: http://www.themarsvolta.co.uk/

HANOI ROCKS – A DAY LATE, A DOLLAR SHORT
Dated cheesy metal ahoy! Musically it's OK, as one of the major eighties mullet-metal bands from across the pond mark their return with a comeback that was surely desired to be more explosive than it actually has.  Sadly, the lyrics must have been thought up by Homer Simpson, because they are awful. The Metal version of the E Street Band sound too out of touch to get anywhere, but Backyard Babies can at least be thankful for their existence. (CA). Release Date: 22nd September. Link: Official Site:
http://www.hanoirocks.com/

FOO FIGHTERS – HAVE IT ALL
Looking at the singles released - All my Life, Times like these, Low, and now Have it All; they all feature in the first half of the album, which is probably where the safest part of the album lies.  A pity really, as "Tired" Grohl's best vocal ever, and "Come Back" is a positive sign that spending that time recording Song for the Deaf with Queens of the Stone Age proved beneficial to both bands. Sadly, this is pleasant enough, but lacks any diversity in style or contrasting dynamics.  Hopefully they'll spend some time taking the polish out of the next album, now that would be a radical departure. (CA). Release Date: September 15th. Link: Official Site:
http://www.foofighters.com/

AUDIOSLAVE – SHOW ME HOW TO LIVE
It is getting really difficult to distinguish the band from the previous success stories. The music of the ex-Rage boys worked so much better with De La Rocha's political outbursts, and Cornell's powerful vocals with Soundgarden were the best of the grunge era, even through to his solo effort "Euphoria Morning".  Sadly, this concoction is rapidly beginning to wear thin, as this is too similar and dull compared to the Led Zeppellin riffs they're inspired by, and you do miss the hip-hop angst of Rage. Having said that, this is solid stadium rock with a zero message, but tons of style and posturing, and it's the style that will probably make the single a success. Oh, and Cornell's vocal mimmick of a sitar is pretty daft. (CA). Release Date: 1st September. Link: Fansite: http://www.agatheringofslaves.cjb.net/

BLACK EYED PEAS – WHERE IS THE LOVE?
Now, these morality singles have never sat too well with me. If they're in aid of charity, then fair enough - moralise away if you're doing some moral good with it.  But as far as I can see, this has nothing to do with charity. I couldn't quite work out the morality either - there's definitely a general Killing Is Bad message, but beyond that - is it the US they're criticising, are they talking about foreign terrorists or American terrorists, or are they toeing Mr Bush's 'Axis of Evil' line?  Anyway, this is all getting a bit too political for a singles review.  Musically, Justin Timberlake does do something for the track - let's face it, whatever he touches at the moment is going to do well - but even so, there's something slightly odd about listening to everybody's favourite sex-god singing 'Father, Father, Father help us'.  Not terrible, but ever so slightly toe-curling. (KS). Release Date: September 1st. Link: Official Site: http://www.blackeyedpeas.com/

CHRISTINA AGUILERA FEAT. LIL KIM – CAN’T HOLD US DOWN

Before I start, have you seen the video?  What DOES she look like? Anyway, back to the point - this reminds me of countless other RnB/HipHop tunes. In fact, Warren G springs to mind, for some bizarre reason.  The lyrics are all the usual feminist cliches (which I know I'm supposed to support, being of the female ilk, but are they not sounding just a little bit tired these days?) but there's never any denying that this girl can sing.  Lil Kim adds very little, surprisingly, but nevertheless I'm pretty sure we have another girly anthem on our hands here. Yawn. (KS). Release Date: 8th September. Link: Fansite:
http://www.caguilera.com/

DIDO - WHITE FLAG

Well, here it is.  The big comeback single after a long absence from the business.  So, are we moving in a new direction?  Are we progressing from the incredible (if slightly incomprehensible) success of 'No Angel'?  No, it seems Dido would prefer to stick to the 'If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It' school of thought.  I'm sure this will please any die-hard fans of the original formula, but for the rest of us, it's a shame that someone who seemed to have such talent hasn't tried anything more exciting. Okay for what it is, but what it is is bland and uninteresting. (KS). Release Date: 1st September. Link: Fansite:

MUSE – TIME IS RUNNING OUT
Straight off the back of their rock-solid, single ‘Stockholm Syndrome’, Muse release a second track off of their forthcoming album ‘Absolution’ which, so far, is proving to be a varied work. ‘Time is running out’ couldn’t be further from the riff-laden download-only track of last month; at least, that’s what the funked-up Billy Jean-esque intro would have you believe. A synthesised bass-line skips along to a decidedly poppy groove as Bellamy begins to croon in ways not dissimilar to Jacko himself. As much as a departure as this may sound, we are soon absorbed by the familiar sounds of fierce guitar, powerful vocals and haunting piano that go together to form this almost eerie track. The sound is fresh enough to warrant this as
a new era for Muse, whilst retaining their classic auteur throughout. (CD). A lot less intricate than Stockholm Syndrome, or its preceding releases. This hasn’t lost any of Matt Bellamy trademark tremolo picking, but it carries more of a swagger about (similar to Cooper Temple Clause’s Promises Promises, except it maintains your interest after several listens), and offers more of an intriguing listen than the current crop of jangly guitar bands in vogue (Longview take note). (CA).

BIG BROVAZ – BABY BOY

You know something, I heard this last night whilst watching CD:UK on video (I know, I know, but well, it’s the only way I get to here stuff like this without… shudder… listening to Radio 1 / Capital, and already I’ve forgotten what it was about and how it sounded. Which can’t be a good sign. Er, the video’s a painful homage to friends though, and well, Brit R’N’B doesn’t get any more commercial and average as this basically. (AF). Release Date: September 1st. Link: Official Site:

STARSAILOR – SILENCE IS EASY
Ah, you know, I do like writing positive reviews, despite how it may seem, it’s just the case that all too often I’m disappointed by majority of tunes released every month. But this is great! Fun! Angry! As James Walsh pithily rants about how journalists talk nonsense  over an orchestral but not too samey backdrop. And though I'd normally hate this sort of thing, but well, somehow he carries it off. I know Starsailor have been a little wimpish in the past, but well, this is a much needed change, and hopefully the way forward. (AF). I’m afraid I’m going to disagree with Alex here.  When Starsailor first appeared, the media hyped up the Tim and Jeff Buckley style wailings of James Walsh to extraordinary levels (naming your band after Tim Buckley’s 1970 album probably also helps provide a clue), but to be honest “Fever” has been the only single I’ve heard thus far that has the bluesy feel of a Tim Buckley songs, and the passionate wails of a Jeff Buckley song. Having listened to Dolphins and Honey Man over the past few months, and listened to Grace recently, putting on Silence is Easy is quite an underwhelming experience in comparison. You start to think that Lloyd Cole’s suggestion that the quality of musicians is not what it once was around the eighties, carries a significant amount of weight. “Silence is Easy” is what Messrs Buckley would sound like if they did Coldplay songs; It is nice enough, but at times it does get very banal and bland very quickly. It sorely lacks the blues swagger (there’s that word again) of Tim Buckley, or the tortured soul embedded within his son Jeff. I would personally prefer to hear “Grace” played on Radio 1 more often than this. (CA).Release Date: 1st September. Link: Fansite:

OCTOBER'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH:
BLUR - GOOD SONG
Ah, it’s so so so good to have bands around like Blur. Whilst nearly everyone else is seemingly afraid of ever trying out anything new, Damon and co. are prepared to risk commercial suicide by just doing there own thing. To be honest not all of it’s been my kind of thing, but this latest song, a beautifully laid back and melodic track which okay, may border on the pretentious side of things lyrically “Sleeping but my works not done / I could be lying on an atom bomb” has such a sweet honesty to most of it which make’s it all rather touching. (AF). Release Date: 6th October. Link: Fansite: http://home.earthlink.net/~dparrot1/

SEPTEMBER'S SINGLE OF THE MONTH:
JET - ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL
Superb indie club floor filler from Aussie new kids on the block clearly after The Vines crown that evokes memories of Marc Bolan and the Stones et al. Raw guitar and anguished vocals complete with happy clappy middle break make it the perfect soundtrack for a game of drunken twister by moonlight in your back garden with your crazy haired compadres.
