| JUNE 2003 SUPER FURRY ANIMALS – GOLDEN RETRIEVER Very much a simply stripped straight up and down track, and not as wonderfully or gloriously arranged, presumably so it would contrast to the previous album. It is, however a very summery-sounding track, with catchy pre-chorus, and plonky piano. It doesn't leave much to the imagination, which makes a change for the Super Furry Animals, so I suppose they can be let off, just this once. Taken from Album "Phantom Power". (CA). Release Date: June 30th. Link: Fansite: http://www.superfurry.org/ OCEAN COLOUR SCENE – I JUST NEED MYSELF They’re back, they sound exactly the same as before, bar that the slight catchiness some of there tunes once had is utterly missing. Lyrically it seems like they’ve put the Big Book of Song Cliches in to a shredder, and just pieced together lines from it at random. So utterly awful then? Yes, yes, it is. (AF). Release Date: 30th June. Link: Fansite: http://www.redhorn.demon.co.uk/ HOT HOT HEAR - NO NOT NOW Perfect for the summer. Singer Steve Bays distinctive vocal style launches the track in an emphatically euphoric style as their Cure/Dexy's style pop-punk is just about one of the few great sounds to be picked up by the MTV generation this year. It follows where 'Bandages' left off, and has the ideal marriage of synths and guitars. Seriously, I can not praise this single enough. (CA). Release Date: June 16th. Link: Official Site: http://www.hothotheat.com/ FAST FOOD ROCKERS - FAST FOOD SONG Oh dear god. So yeah, its a novelty song and it's supposed to be hilariously funny, but, um, it isn't. And you know this. As it's somehow entered the charts at no.2. Obviously my pleas for parents to stop giving there children money to buy shit have gone unnoticed, so it's time to take more direct action - if you see anyone buy this (or anything similar) please gun them down in cold blood. It's the only way they'll learn. (AF). Release Date: 16th June. Link: No. Shan't. RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS – UNIVERSALLY SPEAKING 4th single from their arguably best commerical release to date, and their sound is still nowhere near tiresome. The most laidback track of the four singles, this is perfectly timed in the summer slot which would have also suited the Zephyr Song, but this is a welcome compromise. Great video out on MTV, and of course the album is a must-have. (CA). Release Date: 16th June. Link: Official Site: http://www.redhotchilipeppers.com/ PLACEBO – THIS PICTURE Yet another band to be filed under ‘I’d like to like them more than I do’. As everyone knows, the first album was great, glam whine rock at it’s finest, but everything since has been way way too familiar. Still, if you haven’t heard them before, you’ll probably rather like it. (AF). Release Date: 16th June. Link: Official Site: http://www.placeboworld.co.uk/ NU – ANY OTHER GIRL Blondie and Britpop revivalism unite for this Danish quartet, that come with a slightly punkier edge than The Cardigans, but evoke some of the synth majestry of the Dandy Warhols. Singer Stine is a cross between Shirley Manson circa Cherry Lips and Debbie Harry, and has a voice to compete admirably with both those contemporaries. The song itself has infectious guitar chops, a wonderful walking bass line in the chorus, and lyrics that are just for pure fun. This follows "Disco Hurts" and is their first general singles release. (CA). Release Date: June 16th. New album "Alphabravoshockpopdisco" is out on June 23rd. Link: Official site: www.wearenu.com REEF – WASTER No, I didn’t know they were still going either, until I accidentally caught this on the radio the other day. But, well, yeah, I suspected that if they were they’d be still crap. And they are! So no surprises there then. Just incase you missed them first time around, well its long haired stoner rock, but far more boring than even that sounds. (AF). Release Date: June 9th. Link: Official Site: http://www.reef.co.uk/ BLUR – CRAZY BEAT In which Blur try and relive the past hit that was Song2, so it’s all thrashy guitars and screeching lyrics, but well, Damon looks a little too old to be doing this sort of thing, the passion’s gone and it feels, well, empty and unappealing. Out of Time was a great comeback single, and its just a shame that they followed up with this uninspiring stuff. (AF). Release Date: June 2nd. Link: Official Site: http://www.blur.co.uk/ MELANIE C – ON THE HORIZON Well, at least she’s decided to stop pretending to be all indie and is now just chucking out run of the mill pop nonsense. Everyone say’s her voice was always the strongest out of the Spice Girls, but I cant get over the nasal-ness of it, and struggled to listen to it all the way through. Infact I only did so so that I could warn everyone to not even consider buying this. Jeez. The things I do for you people. (AF). Release Date: June 2nd. Link: Fansite: http://chizzum.net MARILYN MANSON - mOBSCENE Certainly more electroshock than anything before, but retains the metal from the previous albums. It evens has a terrorvision-tequila style group of girls singing the post-chorus. It's clear that a lot of thought has gone into the arrangement and style, and as an entertainer, he's preferable to Mr. Williams. Whilst I have the utmost respect for Brian Warner and the views he expressed in "Bowling for Columbine", and particularly like some of the more nihilistic rock he's done like "Fight song", and the glam of "Mechanical Animals", mOBSCENE not necessarily going to be a classic tune to be remembered for years, and personally I prefer (s)AINT from the "Golden Age of Grotesque". (CA). Release Date: June 9th. Link: Fansite: http://www.mansongrotesque.moonfruit.com/ EVANESCENCE - BRING ME TO LIFE Jesus, where did this come from? And how did it make it to number one? For three weeks now? And why haven't we reviewed it before now? Er, well alas I don't have the answers to any of these questions (bar the fact that I was so uninspired by it I couldn't be arsed to review it before now. Sorry.) Anyhow, it's lady goth rock. It's pleasant, unoriginal and I know I should pleased that something alternative is doing so well, but, but, it's goth for christsake. So I cant. Sorry. Again. (AF). Release Date: 2nd June. Link: Official Site: http://www.evanescence.com/ MAY 2003 EVAN DANDO – STOP MY HEAD Another sorely missed frontman of early nineties alternative rock returns with something that is a cross between grandaddy and the first foo fighters album (in its underproduced sound). The Lemonheads were always so much more than "Mrs. Robinson", with brilliant album "It's a shame about Ray", and even their last album boasted great sub-three minute wonders as "If I could talk I'd tell you" , and Smudge cover "The Outdoor type". This is a great return to form, with a wonderful accompanying video, and album "Baby I'm Bored" follows shortly. (CA). Release Date: May 19th. Link: Fansite: http://www.robertcrosbie.com/evandando/ ED HARCOURT – WATCHING THE SUN COME UP Note to David Sneddon - this is what you should sound like. OK, so maybe David wouldn't get the top 5 singles, but that's largely down to the hype machine that was Fame Academy. Here, Ed Harcourt puts on his Bono vocal, and produces a proper uplifting track that builds to anthemically engaging choruses as opposed to the aforementioned Mr Sneddon's Middle-Of-the-road balladry. Given the choice, I know who I'd rather see hitting the top three. (CA). Release Date: July. Link: Official Site: http://www.edharcourt.com RADIOHEAD – THERE THERE Few bands these days live up to expectations upon their return, and having got a copy of the 'February sessions' of new album "Hail to the Thief" that were available off the internet, I felt that whilst they were good and all, the tracks didn't grab you. However, having heard new single "There There" 'properly' through the new video played MTV2, I am quite pleased with the result. Early reviews from magazines such as NME show some pleasure at their return, but largely disappointment; due to more of an continuation from Kid A, and Amnesiac, rather the supposed 'glorious return' to the sound of OK Computer. This is only a personal opinion, but firstly, OK Computer was not their best album. I played that album to death when it came out, like most people, but The Bends has the infinitely superior songs, and OK Computer just comes across as a touch one-dimensional. I can't listen to any song of that album without getting bored of it fairly quickly. Having not heard Kid A, I am unable to comment, but Amnesiac was a sign of maturity; they could craft great songs without having the resort to loud and soft dynamics and axe-wielding reminiscent of Jonny Greenwood's Paranoid Android guitar part, and it did produce some great songs in "Pyramid song, Knives out, I might be wrong", and whilst no means a single; the wonderful amalgamation of noise that was "Living in a Glasshouse", just seemed at times to be a mesh of completely different parts constructed in such a way that the Gallagher brothers would sit up and think, 'Maybe we should learn more than most Major and the odd minor chord, how about some diminished chords?' Anyway, the result is this wonderful piece of Jazz, which grabs your attention with every listen, and allows you to focus on a different melody running within this incoherent, yet cohesive rabble. So "There There" is a progression from Amnesiac, certainly. But unlike the OK computer fanatics wished, it solidifies guitarist Ed O'Brien's claims that this album would feature more "3 minute pop songs", and this fits that category well enough. Whilst it is no "Iron Lung" or "Just", it is catchy enough to warrant the pop tag, with some great chord changes and follows a similar pattern to Knives out, only heavier. Like Blur's "Out of Time", I found this a welcome change from the pretty tried-and-tested guitar music occupying the charts at present. I hope it does well, and not too many Radiohead fans are disappointed with it, I know I am certainly not. (CA). I was going to write a huge review too, but well now I don’t have too. Which is nice! But briefly, I agree with 99.5% of the above (though have to say I’m fonder of OK Computer than Craig is), and also that the video is damn amazing stuff, unnerving yet funny at the same time, and well, it’s just great that the boys are back on form. (AF). Release Date: May 26th. Link: Fansite: http://www.greenplastic.com/ S CLUB 7 - SAY GOODBYE No, no, I cant believe it's all come to an end so soon either. Life without Rachel, Jo, er, wasnt one called Bradley, anyway, it will be tough if near impossible. Sorry. But sarcasm's just too impossible to resist some days. Anyways, this is grown up pop (at least compared to The Cheeky Girls etc.) and well, it's barable. But...sigh, I cant be arsed with this. Next. (AF). Release Date: May 19th. Link: Official Site: http://www.sclub.com/ AUDIO BULLYS – THINGS TURNED AWAY After We Don’t Care I’d written these guys off as talentless twats who’d be forgotten within months, but well, this is surprisingly intricate, a more mellow and moody track which goes to show that you shouldn’t judge a band by just one single. Not for everyone, admittedly, and I’m sure the dancekids will be bored of it within seconds, but well, it is really rather fine. And trust me, I never thought I’d be saying that about them. (AF). Release Date: May 19th. Link: Official Site: http://www.audiobullys.co.uk/ DEFTONES - MINERVA In stark contrast, despite the pleasant pre-verse chimes of the guitarists, the launch into the column of unrelenting noise is just too dull and plodding to be of any interest. Certainly lead singer Chino Moreno puts a great amount of passion into the vocal, but this is a seemingly less subtle take on soft part, agressive part policy from the recent nu-metallers. There is just no energy, no speed and nothing as catchy as the last great heavy rock record, Queens of the Stone Age's "Song for the Deaf". Perfect for every nu-metal kid that has recently broken up with their girl, but not much more. Taken from their eponymous album. (CA). Release Date: 12th May. Link: Official Site: http://www.deftones.com/ THE VINES - HOMESICK This is a limited edition to promote their upcoming UK tour and it’s only available to media types and not the likes of us common folk, bummer. However it’s such a rare moment of beauty on the Highly Evolved album that it is worth a review. It took me a while to get into The Vines and this was the track that hooked me line and sinker. Pretty as a morning of singing birds and dewdrops, Craig’s lamentable vocals about “never being saved out there” work in unison with a simple piano hook and the harmonies. Throw in a not entirely Slash unlike guitar solo in the middle and you have what has to be for me the highlight of Highly Evolved. Simple, beautiful and proving that to grab your ears Craig really doesn’t need to shout about it. If you can dubiously get your hands on a copy of this edition you’ll be rewarded with a screaming live rendition of Get Free and the bands take on The Beatles “I’m only Sleeping”. If not then if you don’t already own the album you are just daft and need to rectify that mistake at once. (IB) Link: Official Site: http://www.thevines.com/ TOM MCRAE – KARAOKE SOUL Indiepop for the over 40’s, it’s supposedly soulful, meaningful, mature and all that kind of thing. What it is really though is just very, very dull. If you love David Gray, you’ll love this, etc. But why, why do you play so safe music wise? (AF). Release Date: 12th May. Link: Official Site: http://www.tommcrae.com/ BIG BROVAS – FAVOURITE THINGS A revised ego-tastic version of the classic musical tune. And? Well it’s funny enough the first time you listen to it yeah, but gets so tiring so quickly. What is it with urban music and the necessity they seem to have to big themselves up so much? If you know the answer to this and other similar questions, send a postcard to the usual address. (AF). Release Date: 5th May. Link: Official Site: http://www.bigbrovaz.com/ GRANDADDY – NOW IT’S ON On a par with Hewlett's Daughter and Chartsngrafs, and seemingly amalgamated together to create this crunching, but equally enchanting feel-good single taken from their new album "Sumday". Similarities with Pavement are abound, but that's not necessarily a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination. Expect to find your foot tapping merrily along. (CA). Release Date: May 26th. Link: Official Site: http://www.grandaddylandscape.com/ STEREOPHONICS – MADAME HELGA After the commercial success, but extreme disappointment that Just enough education to perform did not rock as much as the hype stated, Kelly, Richard, and Stuart return with all the keen desire to emulate retro-icons like The Black Crowes. Unfortunately the Black Crowes do not sell well in the UK, and have not written a song to beat early tracks like "Remedy” "Twice as Hard", and the cover "Hard to Handle". This does not nearly come as close as the Black Crowes for being catchy, it just seems a wall of noise, and whilst Mr. Writer was more of a track that grew on you, this does not grab your attention at all. (CA). Release Date: May 19th. Link: Fansite: http://www.stereoboard.com/portal.php GIRLS ALOUD – NO GOOD ADVICE Hmm, this is fairly fine manufactured popwise, at least musically they’ve managed to escape sounding like every other pop band around, but, well, the girl’s vocals (or at least some of them, alas I’ve managed thus far from knowing who’s who in the band) are a little weak. Anyway, it’s okay, if you like this sort of nonsense. (AF). Release Date: 12th May. Link: Fansite: http://www.girlsaloud-net.cjb.net/ FLAMING LIPS - FLIGHT TEST The 3rd single from their latest album, and is often the case, the weakest one so far. It’s a nice enough song, but all too low key and a bit of a strange choice to release – It’s Summertime would have been a far better commercial success I’m sure. Anyway, it is damn fine, just not quite as special as most of the tracks on the album, which you should get instead of this. (AF). Release Date: 12th May. Link: Fansite: http://janecek.com/flaminglips1.html JENNIFER ELLISON – BABY I DON’T CARE First time I heard this I thought it was damn appalling, all very bad 80’s pop (is there any other kind?) and all that, and then surprise surprise, it turns out to be a cover of an eighties pop tune. And it’s awful. But what’s the point eh? I mean she’s absolutely stunning, and millions of pre-pubescent boys will make sure this gets to no.1. Still, at least it’s almost a certainty that in two years time she’ll have been dropped by her record company and back on some tv soap or other. (AF). Link: http://www.jenniferellison.com/ THE CHEEKY GIRLS – TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF Well it’s really a you have to try and laugh scenario – this is yet more novelty pop of the lowest order, and not even funny in a semi-ironic way. It sounds like it was put together in about 2 minutes (which might be an overestimate) and there are Spectrum games with better music than this has. Still, at least it’s guaranteed that everyone will get pretty sick of them sooner rather than later now, and that they’ll be dropped by there record company soon. That’s what we’ve been praying for, anyhow. (AF). Release Date: May 12th. Link: Official Site: http://www.cheeky-girls.com/ THE DANDY WARHOLS – WE USED TO BE FRIENDS A return to the synth from 'Junkie' and and a pretty under whelming single, considering what came off 'Urban Bohemia'. The only thing shocking about this release is the video, with Courtney Taylor-Taylor's new hairdo, and Zia actually smiles in the video. I don't think I've seen that from any of the band, ever. (CA). Release Date: May 5th. Link: Official Site: http://www.dandywarhols.com/ GOOD CHARLOTTE – GIRLS AND BOYS We would have described this as the dumbest of dumb US rock, but then The Android’s released Do It With Madonna and this is ever so slightly stupider. Anyway, it’s ridiculously weak, all about how women only want men with smart cars and large bank balances, which presumably the band all have now, so why the hell are they whinging so. (AF). Release Date: May 5th. Link: Fansite: http://www.goodcharlottefan.com/ FEEDER – FORGET ABOUT TOMORROW It is a pity, that apart from "Just a day", Feeder have not produced two better songs in "Come Back Around" and "Forget about Tomorrow" for different reasons. Come Back around was the heaviest song they've ever done, and Forget about tomorrow is the most poignant ballad they have written at this point, awash with orchestra and gentle guitar melody. This is without a doubt their "Beautiful Day". It is a shame that Jon Lee was not around for this album, as Comfort in Sound is probably the most complete album they have recorded. (CA). Release Date: May 5th. Link: Official Site: http://www.feederweb.com/ KELLY OSBOURNE – DIG ME OUT Extremely mainstream rock from Ms. Osbourne, her voice is okay I guess, and sound wise it’s not appalling but it’s just all so average, lacking in spirit and spunk, and well, everyone know’s if it wasn’t for their tv series she’d never have got a record deal in a million years. Buy only if you like incredibly average and inoffensive rock n roll. (AF). Release Date: May 5th. Link: Fansite: http://www.kellyosbourneonline.com/ THE ANDROIDS – DO IT WITH MADONNA Now this is just appalling, and not in the tongue in cheek comedy way it was presumably intended to be. Comparing various pop muppets like Britney and Christina before deciding that Madonna would be the perfect woman to shag, it’s just so dumb, so tacky and so trivial that in a perfect world they’d have been laughed out of there record companies offices after playing this. Apparently it took 15 minutes to write – it’s hard to imagine it took more than 2. (AF). Release Date: May 5th. Link: Official Site: http://www.theandroids.com/ ELECTRIC SIX – GAY BAR The follow-up to Danger! High Voltage is far more immediate, and it is easy to see where those comparisons to White Stripes come from, but this is just nihilistic retro rock to be taken at its novelty value. It is not going to win any songwriting awards, and could quite easily be viewed as the last decent novelty record since Liam Lynch's "United States of Whatever". Worth a listen for a while. (CA). Release Date: May 5th. Album entitled "Fire" to follow on May 19th. Link: Official Site: http://www.electric6.com/ Click here to discuss all / any of these reviews on our music forum. |

| 2nd Single to be taken off their excellent "Long Gone Before Daylight" album. If "For what it's worth's chart position proved how braindead most of the singles-buying public are, this wonderfully serene single is an dreamy slice of emotional songwriting and acoustic guitar served up with arguably the best female vocalist around at the moment, and should have come out around the Iraq war for its lyrics alone. This deserves to do well, which is basically why it will only end up in the lower reaches of the top 40. And people wonder why the singles industry is at an all-time low? (CA).
