BRITS 2005

The rather uninspiring Brit Awards Ceremony takes place Wednesday 9th February. Here to show how out of touch the Brits is, we present our picks for who should win, but given the glorifed incompetence of the judges, who
will likely be the winner.

The nominations in full:

British male solo artist:
1. Jamie Cullum
2. Lemar
3. Morrissey
4. The Streets
Franz Ferdinand - Almost certain to pick up a couple of awards.
5. Will Young

My pick: Morrissey
Likely pick: Will Young

British female solo artist:
1. Amy Winehouse
2. Jamelia
3. Joss Stone
4. Natasha Bedingfield
5. PJ Harvey

My pick: PJ Harvey
Likely pick: Natasha Bedingfield

British group:
1. Franz Ferdinand
2. Kasabian
3. Keane
4. Muse
5. Snow Patrol

My pick: Muse
Likely pick: Franz Ferdinand

British album:
1. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
2. Keane - Hopes and Fears
3. Muse - Absolution
4. Snow Patrol - Final Straw
5. The Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free

My pick: Absolution
Likely pick: Franz/Hopes and Fears

Best British single:
1. Band Aid 20 - Do They Know Its Christmas?
2. Jamelia - Thank You
3. LMC vs U2 - Take Me to the Clouds Above
4. Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme
5. Will Young - Your Game

My pick: Good God, I have to pick one?   I’d rather pick my nose with live wire than any of these.
Likely pick: Band Aid for the inexplicable tie in to Sir Bob’s Award, Jamelia, Shapeshifters, and Will Young would all have valid claims to this award.

British breakthrough act:
1. Franz Ferdinand
2. Joss Stone
3. Keane
4. Natasha Bedingfield
5. The Zutons

My pick: Franz Ferdinand
Likely pick: Keane

British urban act:
1. Dizzee Rascal
2. Jamelia
3. Joss Stone
4. Lemar
5. The Streets

My pick: Dizzee Rascal
Likely pick: Lemar

British rock act:
1. Franz Ferdinand
2. Kasabian
3. Muse
4. Snow Patrol
5. The Libertines

My pick: Hell, it’s between Franz and Muse ultimately.  I’ve gone with Muse thus far, I’m not going to radically change my appeal of grandiose, debatably overblown, well crafted music over fun, but a tad repetitive and too similar to bands with more ability.
Likely pick: Franz

British live act:
1. Franz Ferdinand
2. Jamie Cullum
3. Kasabian
4. Muse
5. The Libertines

My pick: Can’t stand The Libertines, too early for Kasabian, Cullum looks like a square peg in a round hole here, has it really been such a lightweight year? Go with Franz, though Muse blew me away, and continue to do so at the major festivals .

Brits25: Best song award:
1. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
2. Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
3. Queen - We Are the Champions
4. Robbie Williams - Angels
5. Will Young - Leave Right Now

My pick: If Angels wins, I will commit the Baldwin brothers equivalent: will dis-own the UK, find some other country where sense prevails, and move there. Discount Will Young. The alternative’s favourite is Joy Division, The Anthemic favourite is Queen, but this is best song, so I’d go for Kate Bush.

Pop act:
1. Avril Lavigne
2. Girls Aloud
3. Natasha Bedingfield
4. McFly
5. Westlife

My pick: Again, I’m picking under protest – Girls Aloud
Likely pick: McFly or Girls Aloud (can’t decide)

International male solo artist:
1. Brian Wilson
2. Eminem
3. Kanye West
4. Tom Waits
5. Usher

My pick: I can afford to be unrealistic here, Brian Wilson/Tom Waits would delight the generation above us, but alienate the kids. Eminem and Usher are in the running.
Likely pick: Usher

International female solo artist:
1. Alicia Keys
2. Anastacia
3. Gwen Stefani
4. Kelis
5. Kylie Minogue

My pick: Stefani, Minogue left it late. Keys had a great album, Kelis rediscovered her form, and Anastacia did a solid radio-friendly album that got mediocre reviews from the critics. I’d pick Alicia.
Likely pick: Sales beat criticism in the judges eyes. Anastacia.

International group:
1. Green Day
2. Maroon 5
3. OutKast
4. Scissor Sisters
5. U2

My pick: Green Day or Outkast
Likely pick: Outkast or Scissor Sisters.

International album:
1. Killers - Hot Fuss
2. Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
3. OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
4. Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters
5. U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb

My pick: Outkast or The Killers
Likely pick: Maroon 5 or Scissor Sisters

International breakthrough act:
1. Jet
2. Kanye West
3. Killers
4. Maroon 5
5. Scissor Sisters

My pick: Killers
Likely pick: Scissor Sisters

Outstanding Contribution to Music: Bob Geldof.

Before I say why I think this a clear marketing ploy to keep Band Aid/Live Aid in the public eye, Alexis Petridis gives a good point of view on the situation -

Now, my alternatives would have been The Cure, U2, or Elvis Costello. Costello would be over the kids’ heads, and U2 could continue for another 10 years and remain in the public eye, which is why I’d plump for The Cure. They’ve been going for 25+ years, they’ve inspired a crop of bands recently (The Rapture, Interpol, Hot Hot Heat), and would benefit more from the publicity – bring that under-appreciated eponymous record back into prominence.

And as a guide to how stupid public votes are, here are the current results from some polls set up for some of the awards categories. Link:
