LIVE: DELAYS AND JEEPSTER
Leeds Cockpit, 24th March 2004.

The crowd look too weary to come close to the stage tonight for the support band Jeepster. Unfortunately, the band themselves didn't help matters much.
They don't seem to want to interact with the crowd tonight. The singer just about manages a few mumbles to introduce some of the songs and unless he's just incredibly shy, I simply have no time for this because there are bands out there already playing this sort of music, only better in some cases, whilst showing that they really want it. This band have nothing to be arrogant about. Yet.

The two most 'memorable' songs we hear from them tonight, come at the end of the set with Haven-like 'whaley' guitars (the guitarist is a goodun) with some memorable melodies. This band do have some potential, but are currently standing in the 'middle of the road' slot. Whilst listening to Jeepster, you think
they're a reasonable band, but when Delays come on stage, they make you realise that Jeepster are merely average. The difference here being that Delays really slog their guts out tonight, they want the crowd to get off on their music and between Greg (vocals/guitar) and his brother Aaron (keys), they just about manage to do it.

Tonight, Delays open as usual with 'Wanderlust' which is a perfect introduction of the beautiful melodies, jangly guitar parts, 'unusual' noises and quite simply, heavenly sound that we're going to hear tonight. You'd think that a song having a steel drum sound in it would be enough to get the crowd moving, right? Unfortunately, only a few shuffles of the feet at this stage. ''Who's already bought our new single then?'' shouts Aaron to the crowd. A few hands at the front are raised eagerly and the 'cool' people at the side grunt. ''Just these lot down 'ere then?'' after which he mouths a jokingly and polite ''Well, fuck ya then!'' whilst smiling cheekily! The band then launch into the beautiful ''Nearer Than Heaven''. The backing vocals from Colin Fox (bassist) quite frankly make me feel ill because there's something in the 'aaaahs' that send me into a frenzy! (But a good one of course).

''This is a quiet one,'' says Greg, er, quietly as he launches into the beautiful and dreamy ''There's Water Here'' while the rest of the band take a step down. I can see Colin (bassist) looking completely relaxed, drinking his drink whilst leaning against an amp. The 'quiet one' goes down fairly well with the crowd, although a few members could learn a few manners! (Come on, this tiny little front man is pouring his heart out!). ''One Night Away'' is another fantastic album track and another potential single. The guys do the song justice. The upbeat feeling of the song comes across really well tonight as the energy surges to the crowd. The energy continues for the rest of the set and the crowd take off completely for the storming ''Long Time Coming'' (in which Aaron (as ever) isn't afraid to wander around the stage during!).

The guys leave the stage and leave Leeds wanting more. The crowd are demanding them back on stage-to which they kindly agree to and we're treated to a new song that goes by the name of ''Angel''. Guys - that's what you are to us.

Zara Crockett-King.
