| LIVE: DELAYS Carling Islington Academy, -22nd February 2004 Delays - who are yet to release their debut album, have already started to kick up a fuss on the back of their singles - two of which entered the top 40; ‘Long Time Coming’ and ‘Hey Girl.’ I turned up to this gig expecting some pop with ‘nice’ jingly-jangly guitar parts, but what I got instead was a wake-up call. I saw what Delays are really about. They’re not just good hair cuts and pretty guitar parts that we have been mislead to think. They can rock too. And they proved this tonight. Even though it did take a while for the crowd to start feeling what Delays are about, it was good to see a loyal fan base there. Between Aaron (Keyboard player and Greg’s brother) and the band’s very own Bez, the crowd start to enjoy what Delays have to offer. | Than Heaven’ that’s sending shivers down my spine. I’m sweating too much to be cold. ‘Nearer Than Heaven’ with the Paul Draper-esque ‘ah ahhs’ is one of the most amazing things you will hear this year. A step into the calm from the last single ‘Long Time Coming’ and it’s equally as amazing. There’s a sense of nostalgia about it. It’s ethereal and you can’t hate it. Delays really have got it together live. And yes, Greg’s voice is that good. They have the ability to get the crowd going or command them to listen at all of the appropriate times. And ‘Long Time Coming’ finally gets the crowd moving with its upbeat and warm feeling. Everybody keeps comparing these guys to the fantastic La’s. And yes, to a certain extent, that is correct. However, there is at least one difference here; Delays aren’t here for a one hit wonder. They have the tunes and they have something really refreshing about them. I could quite easily be living on cloud nine when listening to this band. Something to do with that gorgeous falsetto… Yes, there are going to be certain ‘rawk’ people who won’t give Delays the time of day but it’s their loss. Zara Crockett-King. Comments? |
