| Ben Folds Five: Dec 1999 - Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall I had been eagerly awaiting this gig, as I had heard that they are one of the loudest live bands around , despite being a three-piece, and a piano as the main instrument focussing on the melody. When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised, Geneva were the support band; a band that could highlight any gig in their own right, supporting Ben Folds Five. I had already likened this gig to the Def Leppard/Terrorvision gig I saw in 1996. Geneva went through their set of songs, surprisingly short; must have lasted 30 minutes at the most. Most people that go to gigs or concerts will tell you; the support band will last for about 45 minutes, and the headliner will normally last for 1 hour 15-30 minutes, 1 hour 45 including encore. This of course is for your average gig. This, however, was not an average gig. Geneva played for 30 minutes, Ben Folds Five played for two hours approximately, and probably missed out only a handful of songs out of any that have been recorded, Dick Holster, Jackson Cannery, and most of the other short 'filler' songs on the albums, like 'Most Valuable Possession', the 'Hospital Song', but all the great tracks from the three albums were played, like 'Army', 'Battle of who could care less', 'Emaline', 'Satan is my Master', 'Philosophy', 'Kate', 'Magic', and it all flowed effortlessly. After the obligatory shouting and stomping and cheering for more; Robert, Darren and Ben came back with an encore of the softer, and often lullaby-like 'Boxing' and the contrasting, and therefore complementing, rousing performance of 'Underground' to end the night. As a band they certainly shake their 'elements of rock' to their very foundations! Craig Aston |
