| Just like ever other magazine/newspaper/website we too have a list of our top films, tv and music of the last year of the 20th century (though we did actually wait for it to end before making our lists). Clearly everyone has different views, so we've listed each writers choice. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| FILM 1) Happiness 2) The Straight Story 3) All About My Mother 4) Fight Club 5) Little Voice 6) Orphans 7) Celebrity 8) South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut 9) Pi 10) – Rushmore (Alex Finch) 1) Notting Hill 2) The Blair Witch Project 3) The Straight Story 4) The Sixth Sense 5) South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut 6) All About My Mother 7) Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 8) Shakespeare in Love 9)Mickey Blue Eyes 10) The Haunting (Chris Denton) 1) Notting Hill - whether it is a true British film is open to debate, but still the funniest film of the year. A good script complemented with decent acting and some wonderful direction. An improvement on Four Weddings, if such a thing is possible. 2) Star Wars: The Phantom Menace - ridiculously overhyped and panned critically yet worth seeing for the excellent set pieces and effects alone. 3) The Faculty - combines the best bits of The Thing and The Breakfast Club. Thoroughly entertaining thanks mainly to Robert Rodriguez's excellent direction. And the geek gets the girl at the end! Brilliant! 4) Fight Club - Works on so many levels - but Fincher succeeds where so many have failed before - by drawing a half decent performance from Brad Pitt. Clever, exhilarating, and a wonderful showpiece for Ed Norton. Unlike the Sixth Sense, the twist is not semi-obvious about ten minutes into the film. 5) The Matrix - Improves the more often you watch it. Stunning visuals, excellent action sequences and top notch editing will take you on one hell of a ride. 6) Shakespeare in Love - Whether you believe Ryan should have won best picture or otherwise, this is still an entertaining period piece, flush with great comic performances. Appealed to all ages and its not difficult to see why. 7) Sixth Sense - worked out the twist at the end but still far scarier than Blair Witch or any other film for a fair while. Bruce Willis is excellent as well. 8) Payback - Mel Gibson's gritty, highly stylised Point Blank remake. 9) Analyze This - unlike the similar Mickey Blue Eyes, this was funny all the way through. Good performances from DeNiro and Crystal. Lisa Kudrow criminally underused, though. 10) Life Is Beauthiful - entertaining Italian wartime comedy. Perhaps slightly overrated but nevertheless, worthy of great praise. Close but no cigar - American History X, Go, Very Bad Things, The Mummy, The Opposite of Sex. Worst 5 1) Virus 2) Soldier 3) Wild Wild West 4) The Haunting 5) Entrapment. (Luke Watts) Webpoll 1) Notting Hill 2) The Straight Story 3) South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut 3) Fight Club 5) All About My Mother 5) The Matrix 7) Happiness 7) The World Is Not Enough 9) Celebrity MUSIC Top 5 Singles 1 – I’m So Happy You Failed – Laptop 2 – Tears from a Willow – Ooberman 3 – Hey Boy, Hey Girl – The Chemical Brothers 4 – Opus 40 – Mercury Rev 5 – Tender – Blur Top 5 Albums 1) The Fidelity Wars – Hefner 2) The Magic Treehouse – Ooberman 3) 13 – Blur 4) Supergrass – Supergrass 5) A Secret History – The Divine Comedy (Alex Finch) Top 5 Singles 1) Promises - The Cranberries 2) Burning Down the House - Tom Jones & The Cardigans 3) Millenium Prayer - Sir Cliff Richard 4) Look At Me - Geri Halliwell 5) She - Elvis Costello Worst Single - Seasons in the Sun - Westlife NOTE: Some might consider a bland version of the Lord's Prayer sung to the tune of "Auld Langs Syne" truly horrible. But since I have no love for either, I don't mind if the Peter Pan of Pop butchers them both in one fell swoop. It's not a classic like "Devil Woman", but at least it makes me laugh. SECOND NOTE: Promises was the only single I bought all year. (Chris Denton) TV Top 10 TV 1) The League of Gentlemen 2) The Sopranos 3) The Larry Sanders Show (Final Episode) 4) The Simpsons 5) Queer as Folk 6) Mark Thomas Product 7) Harry Hill 8) Kid in the Corner 9) Big Train 10) Births, Deaths and Marriages (Alex Finch) |
